By MAX TRELL Knarf and Hanid, the shadow- children with the turned-about names, were sitting on a wooden fence rail at the edge of the road when they saw Willy Toad hop- ping slowly along. Willy, they noticed, was hop- ping in a curious way. Also, he was doing other curious things. He took a hop or two, then stop- ped. Then he glanced along-side of him as though he were looking at somebody (who wasn't there) and started talking at the place where whoever he was talking to shoyld have been (but wasn't) and they heard him say, "Are you tired yet? Were almost there, old chap. Come along." Delightful Walk Then Willy took another two or three hops and stopped again. "It's a delightful walk, isn't it? 1 told you we'd enjoy it. Just look at those. lovely flow on the other side of the fence." Willy was about to hop on again when he suddenly noticed the children. "Ah" he said to his companion, "theres Knarf and Hanid. Pardon me just a moment while I go over and say hello to them." Willy then smil- ed and hopped over to Knarf and Hanid. "Willy," said Hanid when he had come over, re talking to somebody who ism't with you. "H'mmm, I guess that's right," said Willy. "But it's also wrong. He'll be here in a few minutes." "Who will?" asked Knarf in surprise. "Glive," said Willy. Glive was a snail. Knarf and Hanid knew Glive very well. At this they both peered down the road, but saw no sign of Glive or of anybody else. "He walks kind of slow," Willy explained. "We decided to take a walk to the pond. But he couldn't keep- down with him. So I'm ahead and he's behind." Can't Hear "But why do you keep on talk- ing: to Glive when he isnt even here?" said Hanid to Willy. "He can't even hear you." "I don't know about that," said Willy. "I left the words right at the side of the road. He'll hear them when he catches up with me --ah, here comes Glive now!" 'Sure enough, Knarf and Hanid now saw Glive coming slowly along the side of the road, glid- ing along on one leg. He had a cane and a very fancy green coat. He seemed to be talking, too, for he kept nodding to the side" of him where Willy would have been if he had kept down with him. At last, after spying Knarf and Hanid and his friend Willy all gathered around the fence, he came gliding gradually over to them. "How do you do, my dears," he greeted Knarf and Hanid. "Then to Willy he added, "that was quite a pleasant walk we took, William." "It was," agreed Willy, "only we aren't there yet. At the pond, 1 mean." Twice As Much Fun "No hurry, no hurry," Glive. "My dears," he said turn- ing to Knarf and Hanid again, "let me tell you something about walking. It's twice as much fun when you have a companion than when you walk alone, Willy is a wonderful cmpanion. 1 spoke to him all along the way and he didn't interrupt me once." "Neither did you inlerrupt me," said Willy. Then 'they both looked at each other and laughed. "Well, i would have been much more fun really if we could have kept to- gether," said Glive. "I'm sure I wouldn't mind being interrupted now and then." "No, ' and neither would I, aid Willy. "But what can said Willy and Glive Take a Walk BUT WILLY'S AHEAD AND GLIVE'S BEHIND along was: coming. slowly the side of the road. Glive we do when you can't keep up with me end I can't keep down tend we're walking together." Knarf and Hanid suggested a way for Willy and Glive to keep together when they go walking. They suggested that Willy carry Glive on his shoulder. Willy thought this a wonderful idea, and lifting Glive up he, "away we go, Glive--you and I, as togeth- er as together can be!" And away they both went down to the pond together. Thursday, September 20, 1951 with you?
