Oakville town council's vision is to be the most liv- able community in Cana- da. Town council unani- mously approved a report that identified the town's 2022 priority intergovern- mental requests. Addressing these re- quests will advance the town's priority needs, par- ticularly around housing, climate change, popula- tion growth pressures, traffic and infrastructure. I have shared the list of the town's priority provin- cial requests and questions with every candidate run- ning in the ridings of Oak- ville and Oakville North-- Burlington. The election question- naire asks candidates to state their positions on the following: • Increasing the supply of housing and unlocking thousands of more afford- able housing opportunities around the Oakville GO station (Midtown) for our young people and new resi- dents. • Ensuring local control of zoning, ensuring a mu- nicipal voice at the table, forcing developers to build those unbuilt approved housing units and permit a vacant homes tax. • Funding the Kerr Street underpass project to accommodate provincial- ly-ordered growth and in- crease GO service on the Lakeshore West line. • Ensuring infrastruc- ture is there to support our growing population. A new courthouse, new schools and the expansion of local hospital capacity are just some of our community's infrastructure needs. • Supporting Oakville's plan for a net zero carbon target for 2050. This re- quires more EV charging stations, expanding the Greenbelt to include the urban river valley, com- pletely electrifying our bus fleet and updating the On- tario Building Code to re- flect a shift to net zero stan- dards. • Permitting municipal- ities to collect revenue through established fees under the automated speed enforcement program. • Upholding our bylaws that conserve and protect the Glen Abbey Golf Course cultural heritage landscape • Releasing the provin- cial reversionary interest in the Bronte Harbour lands so the town can in- vest in the needed repairs and updates at the Harbour and building. The candidates' an- swers will be posted on oakville.ca/mayor/ and shared in the daily news- letter from the office of mayor and council. Rob Burton is the may- or of Oakville. Natalie Rose Adams photo SNAPSHOT Investors can look for- ward to enhanced disclo- sure of investment fees and costs on the mutual funds and ETFs they own. This is a good thing, and it is a followup to cost dis- closure requirements im- plemented in 2016. The new standard of disclosure is at the proposal stage and the objective is to have it effec- tive in 2024. This effort is being made by regulators in both investment and insurance sectors to provide harmo- nization of standards. His- torically, this has not been the case. Clients will be able to see the fund expense ratio that will include both the management expense ratio (MER) and the trading ex- pense ratio (TER). This will be expressed as both a percentage and in dollar terms. Management expense ratio covers the cost of op- erating a mutual fund. Trading expense ratio is less understood. When se- curities within a mutual fund are bought and sold there can be a charge. When people have bet- ter ability to understand the costs, they are in a bet- ter position to determine if they are getting good value for their money. That's basically how capitalism works. It is a two-part process. Under- stand the costs. Then de- cide what and where you will purchase goods and services. This proposal for en- hanced fee disclosure is a good step for the industry, and a very good step for in- vestors. Peter Watson is regis- tered with Aligned Capital Partners Inc.
