The presentation included several songs that provided insight on the impact that rapid change had on Inuit culture. Between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago, the an- cestors of the present-day Inuit crossed the Ber- ing Land Bridge — settling in Alaska, Hudson Bay, Labrador and Greenland. “They adapted to the land, and learned to live on sea and ice,” she said. Aglukark, who is from Arviat, Nunavut, says her parents grew up Inuit culture, but she was born in the post-colonization era, and grew up in an era with microwaves and dishwashers. “Our formative years were not traditional,” she adds. “We we're pretty disconnected from our culture.” In the 60s, Aglukark and her sister were re- moved from Inuit culture and went to school, learning only English. After high school, Aglu- kark moved to Ottawa to work as a translator for the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs. Aglukark made reference to experiencing personal trauma, and winning her case against the abuser, adding that in spite of the victory, ev- eryone in the community knew what happened to her. Aglukark says she left Nunavut angry and disillusioned. Her first album, Dreams for You (1990), was released independently, followed by Arctic Rose (1992). Aglukark says Arctic Rose was a way to help deal with her anger. Her talent was quickly recognized, and Ag- lukark was offered a worldwide record deal in 1994. A few years later, things changed for Ag- lukark. In 1998, after having a baby, she experi- enced post-partum depression. “I didn't know what to do,” she said. But, that was the beginning of her incredible healing journey — she told the audience. As Aglukark learned more about her culture, she says she became more assured of herself. She has garnered three Juno awards, received The Order of Canada in 2005 and most recently was awarded the Governor Generals Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award (June-2016). Aglukark has performed for Queen Elizabeth Il, Jean Chrétien, Brian Mulroney, Nelson Man- dela, Billy Graham and The Countess Of Wes- oh e is founder and chair of the Arctic Rose Foundation and is an advisor on the Collateral Damage Project. It was in 2012, Aglukark started the Arctic Rose Foundation, a not-for-profit organization to provide supporters of youth, women, diver- sity and culture a unique opportunity to make a positive contribution to Canada’ Inuit com- munities. Today’ Inuit are facing a cultural crisis, Aglu- kark says, adding these youths are lost between two cultures. Truth and reconciliation is an important con- versation that needs to happen, she adds, but its not a conversation that’s not going to happen overnight. There are many sad and dark stories that need to be shared. “Its going to take a long time,” Aglukark says.
