Oakville’s Shawn Francis has helped the McMaster University basketball team ge off to a fast start. The White Oaks Secondary School piloted the Marauders to upset wins over two of the province's top teamsâ€"-Westem and Guelph--in their first two games of the season. It was enough to boost previ- ously-unranked Mac to No. 10 in the CIAU rankings. Francis, a starting forward, drained a free throw with 14 seconds to key a 101-98 victory over then No. 3 (and now No. 5) Guelph. He finished with nine points. As if their was any doubt: Sean Rice and his partner, Jodeyne Higgins are going to the Canadian Figure Skating Championships, Feb. 2-6 at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton. Rice, who is from Oakville, and Higgins, who is from Stratford, confirmed their pres- ence by winning the Central Canadian championships in Brandon, Man., last week. RICE FIELDS Coming off a disappointing and injury-plagued 1992 season, Zaliauskas, a U of T student had a leap of 2.20 metres. Also expected to compete at the Games, being held at Copps Coliseum, is Oakville resident and sprinter Donovan Bailey. MAC They'll be competing in the senior pairs division. Alex Zaliauskas tuned up for tonight's (Friday) Hamilton Spectator Games by winning the high jump event at the University of Toronto indoor meet, last weekend. ALEX ON HIGH Post, 44, won the 1979 Lou Marsh trophy as Canada's top athlete. She still teaches golf in the area. McDermid, 52, is Minister of State (Privatization and Finance) and a long-time Brampton MP. Sandra Post, Canada's first-- and probably best--women's professional golfer, became Mrs. John McDermid when she married the Tory cabinet minister in a private Oakville ceremony over Christmas. It was the second marriage for both. Oakville's first lady of golf recently became a first lady of politics. LINKS LOVE ATTACK ULS Two days after surprising Bishop Reding, White Oaks was itself a victim of a high school basketball upset. Rob Rusnov (11) and his Blakelock Tigers surprised the Wildcats 65-62 as Rusnov scored 37 points for the 2-3 Tigers. Scott Chisholm 24 for the 'Cats. (Photo by Barry Erskine) THE 0/. Jason Craddock netted 12 points, Russell Fieldhouse 10. QEP coach Kerreigh Ernst blamed lack of disciplipe --specifically four technical fouls--for the loss. Roser said Hargreaves, a mainstay in the Loyola pro- gram in past years, is slowly making himself comfort- able in the Red Devils’ scheme. “It’s quite an adjustment for him,” Roser said. “He’s getting more and more floor time (and) he’ll be a factor come playoff time. He can bring the ball up, he can shoot, drive and rebound. "But Andy (Robertson) is still our main man." Hargreaves will get a chance to face his former mates when OT travels to Loyola Monday. “In essence, that was the game,” Ernst said. “We have to play within ourselves. We have to understand what we’re capable of. When we don’t, we’ll lose and when we do, we’ll win.” Mark Dowell fired 22 points for Milton-Sid Sommer hooped.
