The Halton Region Safety Council is asking the community to nominate citizens who‘ve performed acts of bravery in saving and attempting to save a person‘s life in 1992. Nominations are also being accepted for those who‘ve made an outstanding contribution to public safety over and above any job requirements. Nominees must be a resident of Halton Region or a nonâ€"resident who performed the act within the region. Nominations should include the nominee‘s name and address along with a brief description of why they should be honored. Halton‘s budget review committee, which will evaluate the health and social services committee recommendations, must "go back to (regional) staff and say, ‘where are you going to find the money to put the whole $152,400 back in,‘ " he insisted. "We‘re going to have to get our priorities straight," Mulkewich said. "To take what amounts to a broadâ€" axed approach is not really helpful to anyone." "The worst two budgets to cut are business developâ€" ment and social services," Mulkewich warned. The regional business development office is attempting to nurse an economic renewal by luring new employers to Halton, yet is faced with a proposed 14% decrease from its 1992 approved budget of $673,400, he pointed out. 1993 budget until midâ€"February, and only preliminary meetings regarding difficult financing choices have taken place. But at one of the earliest sessions, the health and social serâ€" vices committee recommended slashing $150,400 in regional grants to eight community service agencies; the rationale being that they are large enough to weather the funding loss. In a followâ€"up meeting Tuesday, the committee revised its stance, instead halving the proposed cutback to $75,200 and spreading it out among 11 of the 43 outside agencies Halton supports to some degree. "I have some serious concerns about some of these cuts," said Oakville councillor Stephen Sparling. He suggested instead that councillors look at taking the money out of the roads and utilities budget. "One of the decisions I have made is that perhaps the spending of tax dollars for charity, and this is what we are talking about, is a fundamental disagreement with my philosophy," councillor Greenaway said. Artists are invited to submit entries for the design of an artistic feature to be integrated into the Kerr Street Pedestrian Plaza, currently under construction. The design should enhance a feature of the Kerr Street plaza as planned, i.e., pavement, landscaping, podium, railings, walls or gatework. Submissions are to recognize and celebrate the diverse collection of cultures for which Kerr Street is recognized. The creator of the winning design will receive awards totalling $3,000.
