Each client, for example, would receive a detailed nursing assessment. This would involve a lengthy interâ€" view with the client and his or her family to determine past history, lifestyle, and any particular needs which have to be met. "Our goal is to educate our clients in relation to their particular disease, and in terms of lifestyle management," savys Irving. We want to provide a service where people can make choices, with the result of a better quality of life. Mik points out that with the government having to drastically reduce its health care budget, various health care agenâ€" cies are having to restrict their schedâ€" ules, and thus the amount of time they can spend with an individual client. Both women feel it is essential to do a detailed assessment of a client, particularly with the family involved, in order to make informed health care decisions that the client can live with. They describe themselves not just as nurses, but as health care "facilitaâ€" tors" who help individuals and their families make sound health care deciâ€" sions based on a wellâ€"researched approach to a particular illness or disâ€" ease. This is especially vital with elderly patents who may not have extended family living nearby and therefore are more dependent on themselves and various community services. "We encourage the elderly to get out ," Nurses join forces in business to find best care for loved ones Health care and nursing in the nineties are moving far beyond the sphere of bedpans and bandages. Increasingly, a trend is emerging toward more preventative health care measures, with an emphasis on lifestyle. "We also educate them about dietary, bowel and nutritional habits." The Dial A Nurse service is also intended to act as a link to other serâ€" vices. For instance, if the client is in need of specialized nursing care, Dial A Nurse can link them up with a clinâ€" ical nurse specialist trained to deal with their particular needs. We like to encourage people to search out information and discuss it with their health care professional," says Irving. "There are lots of terrific resources available to people in Oakville, but they‘re not always used as much as they could be, so we would like to provide that link as well." In keeping with their emphasis on health promotion, Irving and _ Mik will also extend their services to comâ€" panies and organizations which would like to offer health care semiâ€" nars for their employees. They have recently made two public presentaâ€" tions at the library entitled "Setting Priorities and Goals for Everyday Life " and "Setting Priorities and Goals Related to Your Health".
