ROYAL BANK Board to discuss public‘s suggestions at special budget meeting next week It took some prodding, but the Halton Board of Education‘s finance committee agreed Monday night to meet next week to discuss public preâ€" sentations on the budget at two previâ€" ous January meetings. The meeting will take place Feb. 1st at 7:30 p.m. in the Halton Room of the J.W. Singleton Education Centre at 2050 Guelph Line, Burlington and is open to public attenâ€" dance. The previous public meetings on Jan. 11th and 18th were arranged by the board and attracted a dozen preâ€" sentations from groups ranging from the Halton Taxpayers Coalition and Burlington Chamber of Commerce calling for spending cutbacks by reopening staff contracts to those supâ€" porting more busing and special eduâ€" cation standards maintenance. But at Monday night‘s regularly scheduled finance committee meeting the trustees heard nothing about the previous meetings. _ This prompted Oakville trustee John Scheel to ask if there were staff reports on public presentations over Your RSP grows faster because your money is invested sooner. Your earnings start growing with your first contribution and continue growing all year long. RSPâ€"MATIC helps make it convenient for you to retire richer. He was particularâ€" ly interested in a response to the preâ€" sentation by the Halton Taxpayers Coalition which gave 50 suggestions for cutting costs. He was told that unless a trustee brings a request forward, no further action would be taken on the issue. "We‘re trying our best under very difficult _ circumstances. _ The Taxpayers Coalition gave us a list of 50 things. Even if we get five or six out of it, we owe that to the public and the people who prepared that docuâ€" ment." said Scheel. It led Scheel to calling for an addiâ€" tional finance committee meeting Feb 1st at 7:30 p.m. and after some resisâ€" tance. trustees agreed. "Other than sitting around and havâ€" ing a coffee, I don‘t know what we‘re going to do," charged Halton Hills trustee Dave Whiting, claiming some trustees kept getting "the cart before the horse" since the budget wasn‘t even ready. He admitted it would have been better if the public had made their presentations when the budget was ready. s Company officials themselves were concerned enough about the test en k results that a scheduled twoâ€"month shutdown for maintenance of the plant www ommmunmmstsoees> was moved up a week â€" oommmsmmmsnce The company was scheduled to shut down between Feb. 1st and March W»â€"â€"â€":S 31st. The shutdown, however, occurred on Jan. 23rd. ........--___:_:g Last October, SLC presented to the board a proposed work program o â€"mmmmme aimed at finding a solution to its emissions problems. SLC originally proâ€" ns posed the work program be carried out by the end of 1994, but later modiâ€" : fied the completion date to the end of 1993. : In February 1991, the MOE ordered SLC to install a baghouse to conâ€" â€"= trol its stack emissions. The company appealed the decision, resulting in an omm Environmental Appeal Board hearing. ce To date, the board has met on 19 days to hear testimony from witnesses : and arguments from lawyers representing both sides and the citizens‘ repâ€" e resentatives. The board has also set aside hearing dates on March 22nd and 24th, and __â€":':;__â€"â€"â€"-E June 21st to 23rd > | péqa?«e' Smtuaem ' =â€" â€" | & Athietic Supplements circumstanc oalition gave ven if we get owe that to the vho prepared . "I‘m astounded SLC never tested until it was ordered to test by the board. The existing ESP was never installed to handle lowâ€"alkali clinker," Bart said. Organ and trumpet music at St. Jude‘s Tickets are $15 each or $12 for seniors and children. They are available at the door or by calling 844â€"3972. Pickfield said the company is still grappling with why dustâ€"emission levels were so high during the testing. _ , ® "It may have been because it was an endâ€"ofâ€"production run and the plant was due for maintenance," she said. However, a RACCP spokesperson called the test results "astounding." Julie Bart said the results show beyond a doubt what the company has known all along: "When they make lowâ€"alkali cement they have a problem with particulate." * LIFELI LSO AVAILABLE ARE Lorraine Farrow, coordinator, Home Emergency Lifeline Program (H.E.L.P.) of Halton, receives $3325. cheque from Cablenet producer Tom Lyttle.
