BRUINS ROLL Sheridan College men‘s basketâ€" ball squad was named the OCAA‘s male team of the week after a pair of impressive victories over top teams. Bruins, now 10â€"2, have taken over first place in the West Division. They are averaging more than 100 points in their past five games. Much of that is due to newcomâ€" er Dave Sherwood, who has taken over the lead in OCAA scoring with a 24.6 points a game. Peewees get ready for Quebec By TED McINTYRE Special to the Beaver #> As some parents will remind you, "These kids are only 13!" But the Oakville Royal Trustco Rangers hold a significant distincâ€" tion over other similarlyâ€"aged boys: They‘ve been winning provincial hockey titles since they were nine. But after being eliminated by Chinguacousy in the opening round of the OMHA playoffs this week, redemption will be on their mind when they head to Quebec City Thursday for the 34th annual International Peewee Hockey Tournament, Feb. 11â€"20 at Le Colisee. This is a team that is used to winâ€" _ ningâ€"â€"but one has been criticized for getting by on mere talent. Previously, the team excelled by being continually pushed by then coach George McDonald, who tuidâ€" ed them as far as their age bracket would allow three times in five years. Bob Kapustik took over the reins this season and guided them to a 22â€" 5â€"3 second place finish in the Central AAA League. And yet, observers say, someâ€" thing has been missing: Driving for the net, a willingness to stand there, taking a hit to make the play. The team‘s dressing room often resemâ€" bles a mausoleum between periods. When Kapustik has managed to trigger that elusive intensity button, however, there‘s been no stopping the Rangers. A reputation as a strongâ€"skating club precedes them. "(The Quebec tournament), was made for Oakville," observes Toronto Red Wings head coach Peter Mavroudis, whose 36â€"0â€"1 squad is among the favorites in 105â€"team tourney. "The big ice surface and noâ€"checking rule should suit their speed. " Kapustik concurs. "Absolutely. That should be in our favor, providâ€" ed that we use the transition weil." As is often the case in hockey, Oakville‘s play between the pipes will go a long way in determining the length of their hotel reservations in Quebec. There‘s good news there, as Adam Rosso, who sparkled durâ€" ing last year‘s provincial finals, seems to have reâ€"discovered his game. The potential, also, is there for some leadership to emerge. And if and when the Rangers do get knocked out in Quebec, they will not go quietly if Kapustik has anyâ€" thing to do with it.
