Organizers of charity fundraisers may have to pay town rent NY 7 WOes t PR U en SmE o .. Py ET (Continued from page 1) mittee recommended denying requests for rental fee waivers totalling $3,300 from the Oakville Lions Club and Rotary Club of Oakville. The Lions Club has booked the Oakville Arena in May for its annual "Super Draw", while the Rotary Club is planning to use the River Oaks Recreation Centre in June to hold its annual Lobsterfest. Both events raise thousands of dolâ€" lars each year for community groups and projects. "We would appreciate, if for the purposes of this event, your usual fee structure for the arena could be waived as has been the case in the past," Lions Club past president Jim Norton said. Norton said about $40,000 will be raised through the group‘s fundraising event. That money "goes back into the community, not to benefit the Lions Club," he said. He said if the rental fee isn‘t waived "it impacts on the bottom line and comes out of the money we make on the event." Ward 2 councillor Kathy Graham rejected the claim that the fees waived by council in the past represented "lost" revenue to the town. "The difficulty is the accounting practice we‘re using is to say this is a loss of revenue. But there‘s no (other community groups) there to fill (the bookings)," Graham said. She said since the groups are using the facilities on "black" nights (when the facilities are not in use), it doesn‘t represent "lost" revenue at all. t S OAKVILLE SHIATSU AND MASSAGE THERAPY CENTRE Celebrating our 8 Anniversary Valentine Gift Certificates available 125 Lakeshore Rd. It‘s a misuse of numbers," she said. "I‘ve never had a citizen tell me they have a problem with my support of service clubs. I think we have lost a sense of people and caring. It‘s strictly an accounting procedure," Graham added. Graham won support for her request that staff report back to council on the accounting procedure used to deterâ€" mine the town was losing revenue by not charging rental fees to the service clubs. Graham urged service clubs to attend next week‘s council meeting to voice their concerns with the town‘s proposal. Later the same meeting, the comâ€" mittee voted unanimously to waive the rental fee for the Oakville firefighters‘ children‘s Christmas to be held in December in a room at the Oakville Arena. A town policy allows for council to waive the fees for up to three staff funcâ€" tions per year. The children‘s Christmas party is the first such request in 1993. One councillor who voted to charge rental fees to service clubs which hold fundraisers in townâ€"owned facilities expressed concern about waiving the fee for town functions. "If we‘re saymg to nonâ€"profit agenâ€" cies we‘re going to charge them, are we not morally bound to set an example ourselves?" regional councillor Logan said. But other councillors said they had no problem waiving the rental fees for town employees. "It‘s one of the benefits of working for the town," regional councillor Bird said. When asked if the town keeps track of rental charges incurred by departments holding social events in townâ€"owned facilities, the assistant director of culture and recreation proâ€" grams Frank Cooney responded: "No, it‘s not an accounting practice." § ; P @ l[!ADAS LARGEST CHAIN OF BEDDING SHOPS Memu) SINGLE M $119: QUEEN .$169, SET... * Brampton e Mississauga e Kitchener e Windsor e Toronto * Guelph «4s *FREE DISPOSAL OF OLD MATTRESS s us # s ah w t th t t t 4CA pouBLE...$139, SET.. hiro FIRM SU SINGLE M:‘lerR%gS $149 : DOUBLE, Queen...$199 58 SeT.
