Father thanks blood donors "It will be another two weeks before we know if the bone marrow has grafted successfully." A successful transplant will mean an end to the anxiety shared by his parents, an anxiety so stressful that Chris Turner was overcome with emo tion while speaking about his son at a recent blood donor recognition recepâ€" tion at Oakville town hall. He wanted to thank the donors for their support, as between 60 to 70 of them respondâ€" ed to an appeal of the Oakville Red Cross last November to become potential bone marrow donors. ("One woman was contacted within four days after she was tested as she was a match for somebody waiting for a bone marrow transplant," commented Mary Ellen Frederick, executive direc tor of the Oakville Red Cross.) And, according to the Turners, a potential Canadian donor "was a good match for Joshua until the final set of tests were not passed." Their search for a donor also included testing both sets of parents, their two daughters, and "last week my baby was tested but didn‘t match," said Carolyn, adding that such an eventuality "would have been a first for Canada." The Turners are humbled and grateful for the support they have received since Joshua‘s story first appeared in the Oakville Beaver last November. (Strong support has come from Carolyn‘s parents, Frank and Sally Casciato, and Chris® parents, Tom and Sheila Turner, all of Oakville, for their assistance with the frequent trips to hospital and babysitâ€" ting.) hen help is needed, people Wm communities throughâ€" out the province of Ontario, across Canada and around the world often turn first to the Red Cross for help. Ultimately, the Red Cross‘ ability to respond to urgent human needs depends on the genâ€" erosity of the Canadian public which, through its support of Red Cross, has consistently demonstrated a strong desire to help. In addition to their search for a matchine unrelated bone marrow Generous support allows work to continue As March is Red Cross Month, the Oakville branch would like to send « Mar Telephone: 847â€"8808 Fax: §47â€"8410 Account ASSIST 333 Lakeshore Rd. Hundreds of people have given thousands of hours in volâ€" unteer time. Many people have made donations to our international appeals donor for Joshua, the Turners also feared the impending costs of the three different kinds of medication he requires â€" two of which were providâ€" ed through a ‘compassionate drug release‘ program. To this end, Chris established the Joshua Turner Trust Fund at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce to help pay these costs. "I would like to thank the people who phoned the Red Cross asking to be tested in hopes of being a match for Joshua," said Chris. Similarly, he is grateful to those who have donated to this fund. Speaking at the blood donor recogâ€" nition reception, he said "I‘m not the only person who has ever asked the question ‘What do you do with all that blood? I now know where some of it has been used. "My son has recently been diagâ€" nosed with aplastic anemia â€" see, what happened is that Joshua‘s body stopped making blood. And Joshua is very thankful to unselfish people like vourselves who are donating blood. "Joshua has received up to now a fairly large number of platelets and whole blood transfusions. These transfusions aren‘t a cure for his illâ€" ness or disease, but they have bought him time until a donor could be found. Joshua is scheduled for a bone marrow transplant; that means a donor has been found," he told his audience. "The two drugs to help stimulate his bone marrow production stopped working," Carolyn commented. We didn‘t see any signs at all that they were doing anvthing for him. We heard about the match when he was stable and we‘re relieved and happy knowing we have a donor."
