This year’s ï¬nalists in the Small Business category are CHWO Radio 1250, Grabbajabba and Syd Mayor Ann Mulvale echoed her sentiments, applauding the impor- tame of the kind of sponsorship that allows those in the arts to realize their potential - especially during a recession. Drawing attentidn to the four awards, Mulvale also recog- nized the value of these one-of-a- kimicreations. “What a wonderful way to rec- ognize (the winners’) contributions to the arts by giving them these incredible awards,†she said. Iley made her comments Tuesday at Sheridan College during a {less conference to announce the 10 ï¬nalists and unveil the four awards created by students for the winners. While not discounting the value of “just writing the cheque,†Iley commended the nominees’ “tremendously wide range of activi- ties" in their support of the arts. “You always need angels in the an: and we’ve always been lucky to get them,†said Oakville Arts Council vice-president Sarah Ilcy, praising the efforts of the Mayor’s Awards nominees and sponsors. Then we thought, don’t give them a choice, make it part of the curriculum,†explained Morrison, adding that this year 25 applications were received. Crafts and Design The involvement of students from Sheridan’s School of Crafts and Design (SOCAD) began rather informally four years ago when only seven applications were received. Today, says Sheridan instructor Skye Morrison, the comâ€" mission process has become a for- mal part of their studies. A total of 23 companies were nominated for the fourth annual awards by seven not-for-proï¬t arts organizations. These include the Oakville Centre, Oakville Galleries, the Oakville Symphony Orchestra, Oakville Stitchery Guild, Oakville Handweavers and Spinners Guild, Oakville 'Art Society and the Oakville Galleries Volunteer Association. Mulvale will present these awards to the winners and runners~ up in both categories at the black-tie Mayor’s Awards Gala Dinner on April 22 at the Glen Abbey Golf Club. Vince Insurance. Finalists in the Corporate category are Ford Motor Company of Canada, The Oakville Beaver, Procor, Royal Bank, SmithKIine Beecham Pharma and St. Lawrence Cement. For the ï¬rst time the ï¬nalists N0 payments ’til July, 1993 “I am absolutely thrilled,†she said. “There is a wonderful synergy between the town and the college.†Aside from the students, no one was more pleased with the blossom- ing relationship between the college and the Mayor’s Awards than Sheridan president Mary Hofstetter. Mnners of the four commissions are: Jim Marshall (Sixteen Mile Table) Birgit McCall (a series of cast glass buildings) Joanne Noordhuis (a porcelain shell) and Sheldon Schwitek (a quilted, textile wallhanging.) represent all four departments in SOCAD - glass, ceramics, textiles and furniture. Another bright spot is the fact that the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce decided last year to sponsor the competition.
