Don't bet on it. While Jelinek was trying to hype the leadership as some kind of real con- test, the bigger issue is just who is to carry the Tory colors for the local rid- ing? That's the more likely spot to look for some political 'surprises'. Retiring Oakville-Milton MP says there may still be some surprises in The Liberals will be choosing their candidate on April 7th and will be gearing up for an election after that time. The PC's are still beating the bushes looking for a candidate to try and retain the riding for the Tories. Jelinek has always crushed any efforts by the Liberals to unseat him and party officials were conï¬dent he could deliver again, especially with a new-look leader in Kim Campbell. No names have surfaced yet from among the local Tory ranks but look for someone with some kind of 'proï¬le' to emerge. Stay tuned. And as with all symposiums, this one has some interesting panel mem- bers. The only trouble is, there isn't one member representing any local edu- cational institution. Certainly the Chamber could have had a representative from the Halton Board of Education, the Separate Board, Sheridan College or one of the many private schools represented on this panel. What we do have is a panel consisting of Buzz Hargrove, of the Canadian Auto Workers a Toronto Board of Education trustee, a representative from the education committee of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and the senior policy assistant to Education Minister Dave Cooke. Former Education Minister Tony Silipo had been slated to attend but after the latest cabinet shuffle at Queen's Park, Cooke begged off. Considering all the current interest in education, some representatives from Halton should have been on the panel. By the way, everyone’s invited to attend, it costs $12 and that includes a Continental breakfast. The session runs from 8:00 a.m.â€"10:00 am. at Otello's Banquet Hall on Royal Windsor Drive. Both subjects create very ï¬rm emotionâ€" ally based feelings in most people, myself includ- ed. I- did not see the Humane Society program that was referred to, but I have seen others in the past. The point I have always felt was trying to be made â€" is that unwanted animals are born to the pet owners that don’t bother, or cannot afford, to get their pet neutered/spayed â€" and if this simple operation were performed before any litters were born, then there would not be the need for the ter- mination of these innocent victims. Prevent pregnancy instead of aborting For the life of me, I cannot understand why this operation is not done for free. I think the cost of preventing this tragedy is what causes this tragedy to be repeated over and over. With animals, we are in a position to take mat- ters into our own hands before the unwanted preg- nancy occurs, whereas with humans, we cannot prevent unwanted pregnancies with as much con- trol â€" whether they be due to carelessness, vio- lence, or the cost of preventative measures. Therefore, we have many women facing the dilemma of an unplanned pregnancy for various reasons, and they are left'with three options: 1. Give birth and relinquish for adoption, which leaves the mother mourning every birthday and holiday, and wondering if her child is in a good home, or if the child is alive or dead; and the child is left wonder- ing why they were not kept, and possibly search- ing for their true- roots their whole life; 3. And last, abortion. I am pro-choice. It is a personal decision, not one to be dictated by the part of the public that is anti-abortion, nor by government ofï¬cials. These people that force their beliefs and feelings on oth- ers through laws will not have to live the life of the mother or child whose throats have been forced to swallow the laws of narrow minded peo- ple. I, myself, was put into the position of making a choice when IbeCame pregnant after my husband, and I, decided no more children, and he had had a vasectomy. I was glad the opportunity of choice was available to me. AsI said, it is a personal decision, and I chose to keep my child. However, if the circumstances of this pregnancy had been different, I probably would have chosen abortion. If the money that is spent on the termination of innocent victims â€" animal or human - were used on providing preventative measure, free of charge, I think a lot less taking of life would occur. clothing to be worn in our Spring Fashion Show that was held on Sun.
