Projects have been selected and construction of the new houses will begin in several locations throughout Canada during 1992. "This program shows that we can dramatically reduce the amount of enerâ€" gy we use in our homes without giving up comfort or jeopardizing safety," says Tim Mayo, Manager of the Advanced Houses Program at Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. EMR has established the Advanced Houses Program to encourage building engineers to go beyond the technology that currently exists and emphasize environmental concerns, such as saving water and energy. EMR‘s Advanced Houses Program is intended to test the latest building techâ€" niques and products. "Many of those tried and proven technologies will be incorporated into the Râ€"2000 Program," explains Jack Cole, EMR‘s Râ€"2000 Program Manager. Lessons that have been learned through the Râ€"2000 Home Program have been incorporated in conâ€" struction practices by home builders across Canada. And a new pilot project by EMR continues to prove that Canadians don‘t need to use a lot of energy to heat their homes to a comfortable level during our long, cold winters. Of course, it‘s much more than that, and in the past decade, thanks to the Râ€"2000 Home Program sponsored by Energy, Mines and Resources Canada (EMR), this craft has taken on a highâ€"tech side that many of us don‘t see. But a highâ€"tech, energyâ€" efficient house doesn‘t have to look highâ€"tech! Ravine property close to park & schools reenhouse kitchen with walkout, many ex 2379.000. Please call 842â€"1630. It replaces the conventional furnace, air conditioner and hot water heater. The integrated sysâ€" tem includes a 40â€"gallon hot water tank, a heat pump, a heating/cooling fanâ€"coil One of the ways that the house uses less energy is with the use of a loadâ€" sharin§ system which automatically controls energy consumption during electrical peak power times. And Mayo notes that "the refrigerator in the Advanced House is so efficient it can be powered by photovoltaic solar panels. It is probably the most energyâ€"efficient refrigerator in the world." "It is estimated that the annual enerâ€" gy bill for the Advanced House will be $785. For the same house built using conventional construction techniques, the energy costs would be $2,862," Mayo notes. The only Advanced House built so far in Canada is part of a subdivision in Brampton, Ontario. Although it looks like any other house on the block, it uses oneâ€"quarter of the energy that neighbouring houses use. Nine energyâ€"efficient technologies are highlighted in the Advanced Houses Program. These feature include: energyâ€" efficient windows that can reduce a home‘s heat loss by 50 per cent; an effiâ€" cient heating system that replaces the traditional electric furnace and air conâ€" ditioner; the latest in appliance technolâ€" ogy, compact fluorescent lighting; lots of insulation; a continuous airâ€"vapour barrier; a sun room on the south side of the house; and an energyâ€"efficient fireâ€" place and a computer system in the basement that makes sure the house is operating efficiently. "A demonstration period for Canadians to see the latest in home technology is scheduled for a oneâ€"year period after these homes have been completed," Mayo explains. us altached garage, finished basement for PEERS ROAC $214,500. 2 modern baths, hardwood and ceramic floors, central air and vacuum systems, all window coverings, fireplace in family room with walkout to fenced lot. 3 bedrooms & computer room or den.
