Mack employees get news of closure in writing Town will lose $200,000 in business taxes The company‘s U.S. parent compaâ€" ny, Mack Trucks Inc., a subsidiary of Renault, issued a press release Wednesday announcing the closure * "That‘s what we were waiting for,‘ said Brian Short, business agent for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, which repreâ€" sents about 140 Mack plant workers in Oakville. j Company employees received verbal notification of the plant closure last week. That announcement was made official this week with a written notice to employees at the plant. Following the vote in the U.S. that the company announced it would close the Oakville plant. About 32 office workers, represented by the Canadian Auto Workers, will also be affected by the plant closure. Oakville Beaver Staff It‘s official. Mack Canada Inc. announced Wednesday its Oakville plant will close Aug. 6th. By SAL BOMMARITO BRING IN YOUR MEASUREMENTS â€" HEIGHT, DEPTH WIDTH!!! The Town of Oakville has offered to help displaced employees to find new jobs, said John Meyerstein, the town‘s economic development officer."We want to be of any help we can in arrangâ€" ing workshops or making introductions Of the 250 people currently employed at the Oakville plant, only about 40 â€" those in the plant‘s executive office â€" will be relocated, Vanstone said. Vanstone would not comment on the fate of the Mack building on North Service Road East. She said the plant building covers about 29,700 sq. m (330,000 sq. ft.). "(Oakville) was a very productive plant," said Lynn Vanstone, director of administration for Mack Canada. "This announcement has nothing to do with quality or productivity. It‘s based on (Mack‘s) longâ€"term strategy and capaciâ€" ty," she said. "It‘s a very difficult time for the employees. How do you tell them they‘ve done everything asked of them and the plant is still closing?" Vanstone said. She said the decision to close the plant, which has been in Oakville since 1965, "was not a decision of Mack Canada." from its world headquarters in Allentown, Pa. Calls about the announcement to the U.S., however, were referred back to the Oakville plant. Your barbecue is primarily made up of aluminum, steel and brass â€" all recyclable materials. Meyerstein said the town will lose approximately $200,000 annually in business taxes because of the closure. The company will continue to pay 85% of its $300,000 in realty taxes as long as it owns the plant property. The figures represent total taxes paid by the company to the region, town and boards of education. Seguin said the town will lose only its portion of the business tax, or approximately oneâ€" third. She said the lost taxes will have no impact on the mill rate since since the town makes provision in its budget to writeâ€"off such losses. "It‘s not inconceivable. But there‘s a bit of a time element involved. I would hope, in due course, Lear could employ some people who qualify in automotive manufacturing. We would be prepared to contact Lear (on behalf of Mack employees)," Meyerstein said. Once the plant is vacant, the realty tax on the property will be converted to the residential rate â€" which amounts to a 15% reduction, said Michelle Seguin, director of finance and treasurer. Meyerstein said "it‘s feasible" some of the workforce could be hired by Lear Seating Corp., which is constructing a manufacturing plant in Winston Park to employ about 300 people. It is expected to be running by October. to other companies," he said. our large selection of mantels and glass doors New Location
