The next day we chartered a cutter "21 de Mayo" and sailed down the Canal Senoret. Along the way we saw condors in a cave on the cliff. After about four hours, we reached our destination, Serrano Glacier, where we hiked into the base of the glacier. It was huge, towering over us. I was amazed at how blue it was. We are now in Punta Arenas, Chile, our southemmost port of call. It is situated right at the tip of Chile. It is fall weather here and extremely cold (especially at night on watch). Our field trips on land are limited in Punta Arenas as we are writing our midâ€"term exams during this port. On our second day in port, we visited an historic Chilean home still with all its original furniture, and full of beautiful antiques. There was an excellent natural history museum in Punta Arenas where we saw a giant sloth and shrunken human heads among other unusual artifacts. Early the next morning we set out by bus from Punta Arenas for Puerto Natales and on to the national park in Patagonia. The landscape in Patagonia was very different from anything we have seen so far. It was mountain terrain covered with brownish shrubs. The predominant wildlife was Hamas, of which we saw many herds â€" also several foxes and a few emuâ€"like birds. We hiked out to a lake into which a glacier flowed on the far side. It was beautiful. It was very cold and rained all aftemoon , but we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We spent the night in Puerto Natales where some of us bought intricately decorated, Chilean woollen sweaters.
