Lakeshore Rd. upgrade _ means trees will be cut Unfortunately, some trees along the route will have to go. While still in good condition, several large ones between Maurice and Garden Drive require "significant" pruning to keep them clear of Hydro lines which, says Bloomer, have left them with a somewhat deformed appearance. The only way the trees in question could be saved would be the removal of one westâ€" bound lane. Next year, however, the Town plans to undertake a "substantial tree replacement program" as part of the project‘s budget in order to compenâ€" sate for the lost trees. While public input on the reconstruction project has been minimal, there has been some concern over the safety of the crosswalk on Lakeshore at Maurice Drive. Residents have complained that motorists often ignore the yellow warning lights and with two more lanes they feel the crossing could become more dangerous. Other trees already in poor condition will be removed. Some on the south side near St. Jude‘s Cemetery will simply not survive the grading and construction activity, said Bloomer. One solution would be stoplights at Lakeshore and Margaret to slow traffic but these are not part of the current project. Bloomer, however, said underground ducts for wiring will be put in place during the reconstruction for lights in the future. By HOWARD MOZEL Oakville Beaver Staff The 1993 Capital Budget provides $656,000 for the project, with $136,000 coming from local taxes, $71,000 from regular MTO subsidies and $449,100 from the Connecting Link Program. According to Bloomer, the Ministry has now approved $460,000 in total Connecting Link funds â€" $360,000 in its 1993â€"94 fiscal year, $90,000 in 1994â€"95. Taking advantage of a provincial subsidy program that will soon no longer be available, the Town is going ahead with plans to reconstruct Lakeshore Road from Kerr Street to Margaret Drive. According to David Bloomer, Manager of Design with the Department of Public Works, the Ministry of Transportation‘s Connecting Link Funding Programs are being gradually phased out. As a result, the Town has been trying to complete work on roadways which qualify for the current 90% subsidy rate before it is eliminated. Under provisions made in the 1993 Capital Budget the existing fourâ€"lane stretch from Kerr to Maurice Drive will be resurfaced while the remaining section from Maurice to Margaret will be widened to a fourâ€"lane arterial roadway This project represents Oakville‘s only section of connectmg link road which remains incomplete. 3070 MAINWAY DRIVE (at Guelph Line) UNIT #2 BURLINGTON, ONTARIO L7M 141 Tel.: (416) 332â€"3343 Fax: (416) 332â€"814: 1245|| ©1595 ® 128k CACHE ® 4 MB MEMORY ® 1,2 MB 1.44 MB FLOPBY DRIVES ® 170 MB HARD DRIVE ® 14" SVGA COLOUR MONITOR ® 1 MB WINDOWS ACCELERATOR VIDEO CARD ® 101 KEYBOARD ® MINITOWER CASE ®# 2 SERIAL, 1 PARALLEL, GAMES PORT lelph Line) UNII #2 NEC fi%l; SAMicrosOoft ACCPAC compan <=>= 1O L7M 11 Fax: (416) 332â€"8145 ALR TosniBAa / e esc l Sefefef fls SATURDAYS IN DOWNTOWN OAKVILLE What do you do on Saturda§ mornings!
