Kelsey‘s Restaurant is holding their annual charity car wash this Friday. All proceeds are donated to Easter Seals. Although last year the weather was less than perfect, the turnâ€"out was quite good. Kelsey‘s car wash coordinator Deborah Warr hopes this year‘s participation is even better. The wash is scheduled for Friday, July 9th from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at 171 Speers Rd. Deborah invites Oakville to take part in this worthwhile cause. THE OAKVILLE BEAVER BAKVILLE DLACF It‘s the first time Beltzner and her 45 volunteers will have an office to call their own and it will be the focus of the organization‘s activities in this area. Here will be held the 16â€"week series for new mothers needing support in adjustâ€" ing to their new responsiblities and in the depression following birth. And from here Beltzner can keep her finger on all the other activities of the group, including a oneâ€"onâ€" But this year she has a special reason for celebrating. She is fresh from the official June 29th opening of an Oakville Aid for New Mothers office above Royal Trust, 235 Lakeshore Rd. E. at Dunn Street. The Aid for New Mothers orgaâ€" nization has heard all these emoâ€" tions â€" and more â€" expressed by firstâ€"time mothers. So meet Eileen Beltzner, executiveâ€"director of the Halton/Peel chapter and developer of the PASS (Postpartum Adjustment Support Services) Canada program who has been helping new mothers with these problems for years. Some mothers may even go so far as to think they may have made "a terrible mistake" in having their babies in the first place. Many new mothers think they might be going crazy. Fresh from the physical strain of giving birth and faced with the reality of a demanding infant, they often swing from joy to weeping. At the same time, they may be wracked with worry, wondering if they‘re caring for their small charge properly. They may feel lonely, resentful, angry, frustrated. Aid for New Mothers ‘to the rescue! As well, she was recently elected to the post of presidentâ€"elect of Postpartum Support International. Come September, she will orgaâ€" nize New Mother & Baby Discussion Groups, again with an emphasis on postâ€"partum depresâ€" sion and adjustment to a new baby. And for mothers who must take a break from their children (of from nine months to five years), there‘s Mothers Morning Out. HOST CONFERENCE Looking to next year, Beltzner is eagerly anticipating June 23rd, 24th and 25th when Canada will be hostâ€" ing the Postpartum Support International Conference in the Halton/Toronto area. She noted it was an appropriate event during the United Nations‘ Year of the Family, 1994. Beltzner will act as conferâ€" ence chairperson and Aid for New Mothers will be one of the sponâ€" sors. Last year, she spoke at the 6th annual conference in San Diego, Calif. "I‘m also planning to have monthly information nights here at the centre," she added. "And we‘ll continue to work with the Oakville Parentâ€"Child Centre and the Women‘s Information and Support Centre." one buddy support system for new mothers and the ‘Warm Line,‘ 24â€" hour information service for new parents, a popular service that brings in 2,000 calls a year, she said. Since then, she‘s been on numerous radio and television programs, authored a book ,The Handbook for First Time Parents, and published a research study titled Reducing Stress in First Time Mothers. Her work on Canadian, international and local levels and especially her recent development of the PASS program has earned her plaudits in many quarters. I "When I first started, no one believed postpartum depression existed," she said. "But later I startâ€" ed getting calls from women wantâ€" ing more information or help. I disâ€" covered there was nothing around: so I got involved." Eileen Beltzner lor graduate and mother of two, has been dealing with postâ€"partum depression since 1980 when she first led a subject group with Halton Family Services in reducing stress for firstâ€"time mothers. f July 7, 199
