While the fall course will be offered in Oakville, as yet locaâ€" tion and dates have not been estabâ€" lished. Of people suffering from one of the 100 types of arthritis, about half also have fibromyalgia, a muscle disorder related to arthritis, she said. Fibromyalgia brings with it muscle spasms and "a lot of pain" that is treated mainly by exercise. VanEgmond said participants are encouraged to remain on their medâ€" ications, despite the numerous side effects all of them have. Participants learn to manage their pain through appropriate exerâ€" cise, relaxation, energy conservaâ€" tion and proper nutrition, she added. The course also deals with the many fears and emotional stresses related to arthritis. ‘"We give them information and make suggestions; we never say you should do this or that," said VanEgmond. "They set their own goals to improve their condition." Smtery Amocsuoe r IQUE: ‘"We build up their confidence in taking control of their problem," she said. "We tell them it‘s not the doctor‘s problem, it‘s your own." In two hour classes each week, two trained leaders will present some 15 participants with a number of coping skills, offer practice in them and help them choose the techniques that work best for them. Learn to cope with arthritis For people with arthritis, the pain is so hidden others may wonâ€" der why they‘re moaning and groaning. But it‘s very real and needs managing â€" by them. That‘s where a new program this fall comes in. The sixâ€"week course will teach arthritis sufferers to become "health selfâ€"managers," according to Pam VanEgmond of The Arthritis Society.
