One year ago, I had the priviâ€" lege to take one of the first Villagers in Canada away for a week‘s vacation. Besides me, mom, and the two kids, we still had room for a week‘s worth of diapers, baby formula, and kiddie clothes. In fact, we took everything on our list, including several bags of groceries, a color TV, the playpen, highchair, and the dreadâ€" ed double stroller. Our method of travel was the Villager in LS trim with standard 3.0â€"litre V6, producing 151 horseâ€" power and 174 ft/lbs of torque through the front wheels. Standard features on the LS include elecâ€" tronic fourâ€"speed automatic transaxle, antilock brakes with discs at all four corners, air condiâ€" tioner and the innovative flexible seating (more on this below). Price for the base Villager LS is $24,195. Our tester had the $3,820 976A package, which includes: flip open rear window; aluminum wheels with locking lug nuts; eightâ€"way power driver seat; high level AM/FM sound system; dual air _ conditioning; _ keyless entry;fourâ€"way passenger front seat; buckets seats in the middle and a bench for three at the rear; nifty twoâ€"tone paint in highâ€"gloss white with aqua blue along the botâ€" tom; and rich blue cloth interior. To that was included a $1,061 CD (ho hum), a $915 power sunroof (biggest I‘ve yet encountered); and just $100 for the upgraded suspenâ€" sion package (really a must). The beauty of the Villager is the back bench, which is on rails and can slide up and down (or be take right out) of the cargo area. But even at the hindmost end of its travel, there is still enough room between it and the tailgate to store the highchair, the playpen, clothâ€" Ford and Nissan put their heads together and came up with a world beating minivan. Ford‘s version (above, in LS trim) is called th Villager; Nissan‘s is called the Quest. meineke @ Ask About Our Lifetime Guarantee dtv.. Throughout the cabin, there are cubby holes, underâ€"seat storage boxes, and cupholders aplenty. Lift the tail gate and the two, large floodlights integrated into the bottom of the tailgate become overhead, night time loading lights when it is swung up. And that tailâ€" gate gives enough head clearance for an adult to stand erect while unloading. Heading up to Port Elgin, we had two adults up front; mom and slumbering son in the midâ€"capâ€" tain‘s chairs; and No. 1 daughter reciting every song ever sung by Barney and another adult reading a book at the back with loads of room to spare. Despite all the added weight, the V6 went from Kitchener to Port Elgin, and back to Richmond Hill, where I live, and back the next day to Mississauga with a quarter tank of gas left. I make it about 24 mpg, not bad considering the weight. Do I like the Villager? I like it so much I voted for it as Best New Car Overall in last year‘s Car of the Year Awards. The Villager comes in the GS and LS models. It would take an entire page to go into the various options or try and list all the little extras built into the design which make it so attractive. Go to a dealâ€" er and get the sales brochure. It‘s big format and makes it a nice cofâ€" fee table item even if you never buy the van. It‘s not that it just happens to be the kind of vehicle I need in carryâ€" ing my family and its accouâ€" trements. And it‘s not the myriad of little things throughout the design which I find so driverâ€" friendly. It‘s the entire package, which, to my sense of things, has been brought together in a single unit for the family buyer who wants high style and high versatility as well.
