From the point that we sighted land, we sailed through extremely rough seas around the coast to the safest anchorage on the far side of the island. Even from our eventual, safe anchorage we all got soaked by white caps and spray as we were ferried ashore on the Zodiak. â€" We were fortunate in having an excellent guide for our exploration of this fascinating island with its mysterious giant moai statues. Peter, the mayor of the north coast town of Hangeroa, and an expert on the history and culture of Easter Island, was our guide for the entire three days. The island was first discovered in the 5th Century AD. by migrant Polynesians searching for new islands, probably connected with the same migratory movement throughout Polynesia that first populated New Zealand. The well known statues, or moai as they are called, were carved by the Easter Islanders to honour their dead. From buried foot to top of the head, the moai range in height 11â€"20 feet. There are approximately 800 of these giant _ statues _ remaining throughout the island today, the largest of which is 40 feet tall, weighing about 90 tonnes. The native islanders still w5 wl call the island by its original Polynesian name, Rapa Nui. The language and place names seemed closely similar to the Maori language of New Zealand. The island‘s official name, Isla de Pascua and its more common name, Easter Island derive from its discovery by the Dutch in 1722. During the 19th Century, the shameful legacy of discovery by the Dutch included slave trade and disease. In 1862, 14,000 Easter Islanders were rounded up and shipped to Peru as slaves, most of them to die in barbarous conditions, a few of them returning with smalipox. By 1877, the ravages of slavery and disease had reduced the island‘s population to 110. Today, the population of Easter Island numbers Our Oakville head office staff, branc associates wish Sarah more memorable tures, and contin > Royal Life AAAAA More of our Easter Island adventures in the next newsletter. Budget has no relief for taxpayers The forecast assumes no proviâ€" sions for inflation, no staff increasâ€" es despite enrolment increase proâ€" jections and no new initiatives. (Continued from page 1) The bottom line to the complex scenario is that should the board reduce its 1994 budget to 95% of the 1993 budget, none of the changes expected to result from the Social Contract Act will translate into any savings to the local taxâ€" payer. Sarah and her parents are grateful for the sponsorship of the Oakville Beaver and 22 advertisers who have made this voyage possible for Sarah. Until next week, It does provide for debt charges and current staffing contracts and an increased usage of benefits by board staff members‘ families (attributed to recessionary job loss). "We‘re looking at 1.65% as the beginning point of the budget. To get to zero we have to reduce by $4.8 million. To get to 95% of the 1993 budget, we have to take out $19.4 million," business services superintendent Jerry Jenkins told trustees at Wednesday‘s finance for 1993 Investment Group Suite 505â€"710 Dorval Dr. Oakville (OTIS Building) A Fine Selection of Fruit Baskets Cheese Trays CUSTOM MADE BASKETS FRESH FRUITS VEGETABLES OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK Wishing you smooth sailing throughout your travels MERAY of OAKVILLE 104 ALLAN (AT LAKESHORE) Beside Liquor Store Start Your 570 TRAFALGAR RD AT QEW Call for more inf committee meeting. In a complex stenario, Jenkins told trustees that a salary freeze in 1994 would save $7.8 million. In addition, time for days off as proâ€" vided under the Social Contract (10 days in 1994) would realize a $12 million savings which would offset a $12 million grant reduction. "With these two items, it reduces the expenditure budget by 4%. To get to 5% you‘d have to find another $2.9 million which in our opinion must come from furâ€" ther staff reductions somehow, someway," said Jenkins. If there was no Social Contract, Jenkins said the board would have to come up with $19â€"million and it would entail breaking contracts. Although Burlington‘s Diane Leblovic questioned why the foreâ€" cast projected a rate 1.65% higher than 1993 and reduced from there, Jenkins said as of today, with conâ€" tracts and debt charges, $496 milâ€" lion is a commitment as of today." Clarification A Fri.July 9th story on the drowning death of 20â€"yearâ€"old David Haas of Oakville reported Haas was spotted underwater by the 12â€"yearâ€"old daughter of a family friend, Al Kalbfleisch. The girl was in fact Haas‘ sister. Two other chilâ€" dren were also identified as those of Kalbfleisch. In fact, the 15â€"yearâ€"old is the man‘s daughter while the 9â€" yearâ€"old, is the son of both Kalbfleisch and Beverley Haas. The Beaver regrets the error. Warning issued (Continued from page 1) The Oakville District also formed a TRACE Unit/Task Force (the combination of bicycle patrols with undercover detectives) who analyze local crime occurrences, identify trouble spots or particular problems and then take corrective measures. The task force, formed in January 1993, has alternately dealt with house breakâ€"ins, shop breakâ€" ins and thefts from autos, the latter again occurring often in Oakville‘s residential neighborhoods. Again, residents are warned to lock their vehicles and remove valuables from plain sight; even if parked at home in the driveway. Training for Life!
