Golfers aim to reâ€"discover their stroke By JIM WILSON Beaver sports editor Don‘t ask Robert Burgess or Mike Latincic about home field advantage. The two are among the area‘s top young golfers. They both play out of Oakville Golf Club and they are currently competing on the Accuform Junior Golf Tour. So what happened when the tour, a sevenâ€"event series for top Haltonâ€" area golfers 18â€"andâ€"under, stopped at Oakville Golf Club on Sixth Line, recently? Like we said, don‘t ask. Neither Latincic, who turned 18 this week, or Burgess, who turns 17 in three weeks, can quite explain why their scores ballooned to 79 on a course they know like their backâ€" yard. "It was weird," said Latincic, who will be heading into Grade 12 at White Oaks Secondary School next month. The Oakville stop was the third of the tour (No. 5 is at North Halton on Aug. 27) and it was especially disheartening for Burgess, who had finally appeared to have broken out of a yearâ€"long slump. But the Appleby College student got back on track Monday by firing a 71 at Dundas Valley before losing in a suddenâ€"death playoff to Tour leader Mitch Mahoney in the tour‘s fourth event. Latincic? He wasn‘t even there; he opted to join an Ontario team that took part in the Williamson Cup competition in Hudson Que., last weekend. That decision cost Latincic any chance of claiming the Accuform title. Pointsâ€"60 for first and down to one for lastâ€"are awarded for each of the 60 golfers‘ placing. He was sixth after three events but was passed by a bunch of golfers with his noâ€"show at Dundas Valley. And the trip to Hudson‘s tough Witlock course was no picnic. He banged out a 78 on his first round and was disqualified after an incorâ€" rect ball drop on his second. Chosen for the team after a strong finish at the Ontario Junior championships, Latincic is still conâ€" fident of a top 10 Accuform finish. He only finished 32nd on the tour last year but a host of lessons, practices and a slight change in his swing vaulted him among the leadâ€" ers this time around. "I just seem to make mental errors," he said. Burgess can tell all about that. "This game is 95 per cent mental," he says. His confidence was shattered after last year, when he plummeted to near the bottom of the Accuform Tour after finishing fourth the preâ€" vious season. "I developed some bad habits and they just grew over the winter," he explained. But a few visits to his personal guru, instructor Mark Evershed of Carlisle, and some heartâ€"toâ€"hearts with his father, things slowly began to improve. "The past month, I‘ve been hitâ€" ting the ball better than I have in two years," Burgess says.
