But if it does, Oakville better be ready â€" lives could hang in the bal- Natural and man-made disasters do occur when they are least expected and that’s why the Town of Oakville passed its revised and updated emergency plan at a special council meeting Wednesday night The plan â€" a package two years in the making - updates and sharp- ens the Town’ s response to prospec- tive calamity whether it be a hum- cane, gas explosion, rail disaster, plane crash or disease epidemic. Town prepares for the worst The by-law to accept the new plan was passed unanimously by council. The ï¬nancial cost of the plan so far has been $24,000, spent to upgrade parts of Town Hall to emergency status, but the price is well worth it considering the bene- ï¬ts, said councillors. “Of course, it’s necessary,†Said Ward 2 councillor Kathy Graham, after the meeting. “What’s $24,000 compared to the loss of one life?†The plan is periodically updated, but it has come a long way from the old coldâ€"war plan of 10 years ago, which was designed to protect Oakville from nuclear attack. Today’s plan focuses on coordi- nation and networking between the crucial agencies that make up the Emergency Control Group. Microphones, emergency light- ing, and safety equipment for the team members are part of the upgrade in Town Hall that now makes the Bronte Room an emer- 3.7.9 I? “WM #017,â€! , gency operations center to act as The most important new wrinkle crisis headquarters during time of added to the plan is the post of an disaster. - ~ emergency site coordinator.“ _ The only other cost was in man bouts to get the new plan designed and completed, said deputy town clerk Peter Wagland. Every member of council, including mayor Ann Mulvale, wears a beeper that will notify them of an emergency. Since only the mayor, or acting mayor, can ofï¬cially declare a state of emergency, it is important to train each councillor in mayoral duties during an emergency. There are courses for councillors to attend to train them for this responsibility. “It’s a wise investment,†said Mulvale. “We have a concentrated population, and thus far, we’ve beef) spared a major disaSter. But we are ready.†This post involves liaising between the emergency units involved, making sure they all run smoothly and efï¬ciently through times for crisis. The position has not yet been ï¬lled, but council will be looking for a suitable candidate. “The flew position will help us all work together,†said deputy ï¬ne chief Ted Guest. Council heard presentations from six delegations, including Fire Chief Wayne Gould and Halton Police Superintendent Rick Kivell. “It’s a different focus than the old plans,†said Gould. “The focus is on getting the groups to commu- nicate and work together. The next step is to test the plan.†(See 'Communication' page 2) 300jobs coming to Oakville The Dominion of Canada Insurance Company will be mov-‘ ing to Oakville next year - bringing 300 jobs with it.
