Due to a system malfunction, results of the poll last week are unavailable, we are running the question again this week. Results will be published in next Friday‘s issue. Residents of Oakville who experienced the famous Mississauga rail disasâ€" ter and subsequent evacuation, are only too well aware of the implications of not having a good emergency plan in force. The current revised model has taken two years to modernize and with this revision, the town and region are prepared for just about anything that might require an emergency response. With the heavy traffic on our highways, rail lines and a refinery within our borders, it‘s somehow reassuring to know that the response will be quick and well organized. The updated plan cost $24,000 but given the implications of not having such a guide, it was a case of money well spent. Those days are over but the need for emergency planning is a continuing process that must be updated to ensure that if a real emergency does arise, there will be a plan of action for those in authority. raid or emergency sirens. The idea was that if a nuclear attack was coming, people would have some time to seek shelter. The measure was just windowâ€"dressing of course. In the event of a nuclear blast, there would really be no where to hide and even if you came out, you wouldn‘t last long. Many people may recall the tall towers in Oakville that supported airâ€" Perhaps as the next logical step, we could have a legion of U.S. electronic media types commenting on the election. But, come to think of it, aren‘t the top news people former Canadians? There‘s a lesson in there somewhere. Ready for disaster How are we to have any faith in our political leadership, and we use the term loosely, if they continue to look south of the border for expertise in such a basic area as an election campaign? At least in the case of the Tories, who have backed the North American Free Trade Agreement, we can understand (but not condone) the moveâ€"but what about the antiâ€"NAFTA policy of the NDP? It boggles the mind. Aside from not being too politically bright, the move shows, once ag:fin, that there is still a massive inferiority complex at work in this country and what‘s more shocking, is that it appears more rife at the highest political levels. No one is talking abut Noble‘s role in the PC strategy but reports quoting Conservative officials, say Noble will work on communications and strategy. The upshot of the affair was that the guy responsible for the debacle fell on his political sword, more the wiser for his experience. Enter the Progressive Conservatives in search of a third majority government. Learning absolutely nothing from the NDP experience, the Tories have decided to enlist the ‘expertise‘ of one Phil Noble, a political consultant based in Charleston South Carolina. Yup, that‘s in the U.S. folks. The finished product arrived just in time for McLaughlin‘s campaign launched. Unfortunately, some devious reporter asked who made the glitzy video. A sheepâ€" ish aide confessed that it had been made by an American firm in Washington. Ouch! Excuses flew but the result was that the campaign launch got lots of ink and airplay but for all the wrong reasons. Our dollar is fast collapsing because we drink Spanish liquor, serve Danish Cookies, read British magazines, walk with Italian loafers, eat Icelandic codfish, holiday on Miami‘s beaches, keyboard Japanese videoâ€"games, throw Chinese baseballs, and buzz around in German cars, etc., etc. Dear Sir: f Why is Canada turning into a banana republic? Why is the Canadian dollar going down, down, down? And why do university graduates have fewer jobs to go to, each and every year? Why has Canada become a worse place to live in, as time goes on? I asked my wise, old uncles for their wisdom. The answer was simple and obvious. Your readers should hear this: doliar is fast collapsing because we drink Spanish liquor, Why don‘t we all try to save ourselves from a serve Danish Cookies, read British magazines, walk with _ calamity? LIBERAL LEADER JEAN CHRETIEN TELING USHELL SAVE THECOUNTRY In other words, our dollar is collapsing because we don‘t buy Canadian products! As we send our dollars abroad, it becomes increasingly worthless. Pretty soon, Canada will experience the "rublesâ€"intoâ€"rubble" erosion, that is, the cost of imported goods will climb steadily higher. Just look at the history of all those bananaâ€" republics. A collapsing dollar will cause apparent inflaâ€" tion, too! As jobs become scarce, crimes of desperation (like robberies) occur more often. We have spent a lot of time and money developing this trustee, only to find out she does not understand the jargon and is unable to translate it to the public.
