"True," he said, "but it was just another adventure at the time. I thought I would try it for a while. Oakville wasn‘t meant to be a perâ€" manent landing spot. The funny thing is I liked it." It must also be said he was a litâ€" tle tired of practicing medicine in a foreign language or through interâ€" preters. Even then, in Frobisher Bay and Jerusalem, he felt a deep desire to talk to his patients and find out what was making them tick â€" and sick, for that matter. As his Oakville practice grew through the 1970s he began to see stress as the root of many patient problems. He became, he said, more The fact is coming to Oakville in 1971 and setting up a family pracâ€" tice was the first real change of gears. The Toronto native‘s eyes danced. For a fellow who once thrived on adventure, interning in Edmonton, Alberta, and practicing frontier medicine in the arctic and then Israel, and globeâ€"trotting as a footâ€" loose bachelor until the age of 41, flirting with tennis balls and ski hills and whatnot â€" well, parentâ€" hood and writing a book seem rather tame by comparison. "My book is probably the most exciting thing to come along since my sons were born," he said whipâ€" ping out his brag book and phoâ€" tographs of two handsome boys. Over the past four years the U of T grad has penned his first book, "Always Change A Losing Game," to be published next year by Key Porter in Toronto. Interviewed in his Trafalgar Road office recently his boyish glee was palpable. In his own life he has often marched to the beat of a dlfferent drummer. Of course, I paraphrase. Posen is the quintessential Blue Jay fan; not quite refined, but certainly civilized. And duly sensitive in his patient care in his Stress Mastery, Lifeâ€"style Counselling and Psychotherapy practice. He is a forthright guy though, who says "If something isn‘t working â€" stop doing it!" avid Posen has a great smile. Some would say "silly grin" â€" no matter â€" as long as it puts you at ease. Humor is a big part of this stress doctor‘s modus operandi. Oneâ€"onâ€"one, or by the roomful, the Oakville physician has a charming way with words. Warm and energetic, enthusiastic and concerned, Dr. Posen isn‘t one to beat around the bush. You got a problem? Spit it out. Stress doctor tries helping people balance a life of work and leisure It was a perfect fit for Posen. He could see there were "big applicaâ€" tions, and I enjoyed doing it. I liked talking to people. It was much more fun than examining their physical ailments." And clearly as the rollercoaster ride of the 1980s took its toll, stress was at the root of many physical and mental disorders. Other doctors "It was fascinating, exhilarating. I went to more seminars then, found a mentor down at Harvard (Dr. Matthew Budd) and began to bring it into my work." Then in 1981 he went to a heart disease conference in Montreal and he saw his first presentation on Stress Management. Posen experiâ€" enced something of an epiphany. "I was hooked," he said. The presenter talked about the causes of stress, how it showed up, what can be done to improve the sitâ€" uation. "Patients were interested in getâ€" ting the medicine and getting out of the office," he noted. It was frustratâ€" ing. and more committed to preventive medicine, involving lifeâ€"style counâ€" selling.
