BiEt?"tt1tf?.ty,it, Fleming is sketchy about her history. Rehashing is clearly a painful exercise. Bom in Drummondville, Quebec, she went to boarding school as a girl. According to her written resume, she went to C.J.E.P.T. in Montreal after high school to study the humanities; did some painting and drawing at the Museum of Fine Arts; and later stud- ied Interior Design at Sir George Williams University. She has an artistic flare. Her low-rent, one bedroom Burlington apartment, in what can only be described as a shabby building, is a picture of elegance and taste. It is a testament to what can be achieved with a modicum of elbow grease, a dash of imagination, and a modest invest- ment of capital. "You don't know how close I came tc living in my car," she explained. "It's a long story." and cautious about who she trusts. She con sented to this interview to publicize th "Second Stage Housing Project" sponsore: by the Oakville-Trafalgar Rotary Club. "My life was pretty grim," Fleming said softly, candidly, in a recent interview, "Now I have some hope." If a woman cannot afford her own home or simple lacks the strength to manage the move, she may be thrown back into the abusive relationship. It happens far too often. In an attempt to break this destructive cycle, the Rotary Club of Oakville-Trafalgar has stepped in with a pilot project called, "Second Stage Housing". With a budget of $5,000 over the past year, their mandate has been to assist five women from the shelter find a more positive focus in life by cleaning and redecorating an apartment for each of them. Norma Gamble says the results have been encouraging. Gamble is one of the original "win/win" women of the community. A member of the Oakville-Trafalgar Rotary Club, she is a professional speaker by trade; an "idea per- son" by nature; and a networker of the first rank. he reality is, the women who are driven to seek shelter at Halton Women's Place are often caught in a revolving - door of poverty and violence. It is a crushing cycle from which it is hard to break free.
