Schools could close if teachers forced to take time " says union Place Dill: Time: The settlement in Halton could call for teachers to take some of the nine professional development days off with- out pay, she said. "But teachers are anxious to know how it will impact them." Babel hopes for a settlement by Thurs., Nov. ll, when a report on board-teacher negotiations will go to the trustees. Sheridan now accepting January registrations Under the social contract, each employee can be ordered to take as many as 12 days off annually without pay, she said. Some boards, particularly those with growing enrol- ment, have negotiated settlements in which employees will not have to take any days off without pay, she added. Babel said larger boards have reached deals with the fewest days off. If teachers are ordered to take social contract days off without pay, Halton elementary schools could be closed for those days, says a teachers' representative. Penny Babel, president of the Halton Elementary Teachers Association (HETA), said "there will be a reduc- tion in service of some sort." But she thinks professional development days will be sacrificed first to keep class- rooms in the Halton Board of Education system open. All programs begin Jan. 3rd. Arrangements m made to accommodate students who complete studies in mid- to late-January. The days off without pay c'an’t be scheduled during teacher holidays,' but must come from classroom or PD days. _ Sally Rewbotham, president of the Halton chapter of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation, is more pessimistic about an early settlement or avoiding days off without pay. . "I can't guess when it will be settled," she said. "I don't think it will be wrapped up quickly." Rewbotham believes ig leacher groups in the province will be affected. "There will be some (days without pay) here, but) don l lmow how many." Sue Currie, superintendent of employee services for the Halton board, said "we are reviewing the school year cal- endar to recover unpaid days with the least disruption." The board and teachers, she. said, are negotiating the part of the social contract called the subsector agreement. This agreement calls for a 4.75 percent reduction in staff, she said. The main aspects to be negotiated to obtain the desired savings are salary, annual experience increment and staffing, she added. Currie said the board will resort to having employees take days off without pay when other cost-saving measures and natural staff reduction don't enable it to meet the tar- take and get. ra; Gl. iiii 335-731or cat OFFERS END NOV 27, I Alf Call Today!
