& Altima â€" Nissan‘s first allâ€"North American family car Their efforts were recognized not long after, when America‘s leading design publication selected Altima as one of the bestâ€"designed products of 1993. .D. (International Design) Magazine chose Altima from a record 330 new products as a winner of the prestigious .D. Award for Design demand in 1994, Altima marks the first time ever that a team of North Americans has played the lead roles in engineering, styling, testing and building an allâ€"new, mainâ€" stream family sedan for a Japaneseâ€" based autoâ€"maker. us $ oc so. 4 Piuis 1988 SENTRA HATCHBACK AM/FM stereo kKms 1989 NISSAN 240 Buy or Lease! One of the keys to Altima‘s success has been that it‘s a modestly priced 5â€" seater with the quality, roadâ€"feel, comâ€" fort, performance, ride, handling and accident avoidance capability of cars costing a great deal more. Styled at Nissan Design International in San Diego, Altima was engineered at Nissan Research and Development in Farmington Hills, Mich. and climate tested in Arizona and northern Ontario. Altimas are built at North America‘s biggest single auto plant â€" Nissan‘s masâ€" sive mileâ€"long stamping, component and assembly complex in Smyrna, Tenn. A unique Altima feature is its superâ€" 19)%5 §5 495 : BECOME FRIENDS 1450 SPEERS ROAD Just east of Ird Line 2 STANZA XP ) DODGE SHADOW strong body â€" one that shields occupants in a crash while resisting the sort of bending, squeaks and rattles that are common in many family sedans. Altima gains its structural strength from the Smyrna plant‘s use of North America‘s first Intelligent Body Assembly System or IBAS. This patentâ€" ed arrangement of 51 robots is grouped around and over a passageway about the size of an automatic carâ€"wash. IBAS replaces the conventional carâ€" industry bodyâ€"building process which uses clumsy "jigs" and welders to assemble the bodyâ€"shell bit by bit â€" a setup prone to inaccuracy, flexing and inferior welds. .AUIUI SI 4 995 miles 0) I 11 By contrast, IBAS mates, welds and §7 495 RS] anving modes for sporty, normal or winâ€" ter driving. A new technical first will be the introduction of an optional, entirely automatic clutch system, known as Saab Sensonic. It replaces the clutch pedal with an electronically controlled operatâ€" ing module that takes most of the physiâ€" cal effort out of the driving process, shifting gears is smoother and faster and allowing the driver to concentrate more of his attention on the road. The new Saab V6, in which Saab engineers have played a significant development role, is a 24â€"valve 2.5â€"litre unit developing 170 bhp. The new 900 also uses a new, comâ€" pact fiveâ€"speed manual gearbox develâ€" oped by Saab for this application as well as the option of a new fourâ€"speed autoâ€" matic transmission with three different driving modes for sporty, normal or win: New engines and transmissions All versions of the new 900 will be powered by multiâ€"valve engines, starting with a 2.0â€"litre 16â€"valve fourâ€"cylinder unit developing 133 bhp. This is supplementâ€" ed by a 2.3â€"litre 16â€"valve with double balancer shafts and 150 bhp. At the top of the range is a high performance 2.0 litre turbo which will enter the market in the spring of 1994. The turbo engine has the unique Saab Trionic engine management system and double balancing shafts with a power output of 185 bhp. For the first time Saab is also offering a new sixâ€"cylinder engine. previous model. The new Saab 900 is fitted with selfâ€" repairing front and rear bumpers able to recover their shape after impacts up to 8 km/h and a low speed crash protection system that prevents panel damage in bumps up to 15 km/h. Lowâ€"speed crash protection system laserâ€"checks Altima‘s body in a single step and in seconds. Each finished shell is accurate to within 0.1mm â€" less than the thickness of a sheet of paper. This brings several other benefits. For example, where many autoâ€"builders have tended to accept that parts may have to be adjusted to compensate for inaccuracies, Altima goes together with precision, first time, every time. This yields a car, free of rattles, squeaks and vibrations, and likely to stay that way years longer than any of its rivals. Altima‘s strength also creates an exceptionally secure platform on which to mount Altima‘s suspension â€" which in turn makes the car exceptionally nimâ€" ble, predictable and stable. 4â€"ar., 5.0L V8, auto.
