Fire warning brought back bad memories Dec and that . McC Tuesday morning was different. Barry and Michael got up around 5 a.m. to start work while Barry‘s wife Karen stayed in bed. A short time later little Phillip began shaking his mother and babbling about the radio making a "sparking" sound. "Karen told him to forget it and go back to bed but he insisted," explained Barry. " ~Get up now!‘ he said. Phillip never talks back." After Phillip refused to relent, Karen got up and found a blue glow flaring from the back of the radio on Michael‘s bedside table â€" only three inches from her son‘s bed. after "She came out of the room pure white," said Barry. After Karen pulled the table out and immediately unplugged the unit she found that the sparks originated in the power cord where it fastens to the back of the player. The Oakville Fire Department was called and a fire prevention officer came to the house to examine the faulty stereo. "We‘re going to get Phillip a plaque and take him out for dinner," said Barry, the father of five. Tuesday‘s close call was an uncomfortable reminder of the fire four years ago which destroyed the Braces‘ home in Marorma, Ont. That, too, was electrical in origin. ‘"We lost everything," said Barry "Maybe Phillip remembered that." (Continued from page 1) must end," said Haynes. She said that violence against women not only comes at the hands of strangers but also from husbands, fathers and boyfriends. Haynes said that it was time for everyone to become involved in the issue of violence against women. Vigil‘s message is to never forget victims "It is vital to channel our anger to effect positive change," said Haynes. ‘"We must resolve to go further and resolve to eradicate all violence against women." About 60 people turned out for the event including a few men and chilâ€" dren who braved cool temperatures to hear various speakers and sing along to John Lennon‘s ‘Imagine‘. For 16 year old White Oaks Secondary School student Kristen Kelly, the recent deaths of both Leslie Mahaffey and Kristen French have also been added to the toll of violence against women. ‘‘We come together to share feelings and give each other strength," she said, in calling for a world where "women do not have to fear for their personal safety." Another WOSS student, Robyn Hretzay, said it was time to move from issues of environmental awareâ€" ness to antiâ€"violence. ‘"‘We‘ve worked hard to make our world a cleaner place and now we must work to make our lives cleaner," she said. Following the speeches and songs, a semiâ€"circle of women lit 14 candles as the names of the 14 slain women were read. It was these names, that should never be forgotten, said organizers. "We can‘t let it pass by. It‘s too important. These women must never be forgotten. We always hear the name of of him (Marc Lepine) but never the women who died," said Jan Toms, who took part in the vigil along with her teenaged daughter Kate. Caroline Hubberstey also said it was an event that must be rememâ€" bered. "We‘re not like the States where they glorify their killers. We must remember the people who died," she said. Mary Lou Clark stood and chided her two young sons as they played with the candles. The single parent said she wanted her sons to be raised in a way that ensured they wold not condone violence against women. "I want them to grow up different ly," said Clark. Event organizer Kathy LePatourel said all of the groups were pleased with the turnout on such a wet, cold night. "I am personally very pleased with the mix of people...women, men, children. It‘s nice to see a broader mix than just women," she said. And what did it feel like as a man at such a gathering? "It‘s awkward," admitted Gary Shillington, who said he wanted to attend to show his solidarity on such an important issue. ‘"‘The madness has got to end," he said. Harvey Aitchison has attended vigâ€" ils for three years running and said he is feeling more at ease every year. "More men have to make a stateâ€" ment," he said. _ . 8. 1993 (Continue alerted his another one raney Street ording to 1 s father, his 1 1 often slaps e deck/radio t it to shut off : falls asleep. ontinued frompage ted his mother t er one had starte Street home..
