By ROBERT KEARSEY Special to the Beaver On Thurs., Oct. 28th, I received my high school diploma via the Educational Centre at Maplehurst Correctional Centre. The sense of accomplishment I feel is one I have never felt before. Maplehurst education experience was posit1ve When I first came to Maplehurst in December *92, I was 22â€"yearsâ€"old, serving a 20â€" month sentence, and I only had 4.5 high school credits. My future looked very bleak and for me to leave here as a high school graduâ€" ate seemed an impossible task. I soon learned that Maplehurst offered correspondence courses and an excellent educational faciliâ€" ty. I decided that it would do me some good to take a few courses. What I didn‘t expect was to enjoy my schoolwork as much as I did. I discovered that learning was fun and I couldn‘t get enough of it; as soon as I finished one course I would start another one. I began to realize how much more life had to offer when a person is educated and what I was missing. * I began to have dreams about attending college one day. My dreams of attending college one day became so strong I was deterâ€" miined to make it a reality. © With the support of the educaâ€" off with $10,000 \ Thieves made off with a huge haul of cigarettes, Monday, after breaking into the Kerr Street Shoppers Drug Mart. According to Halton Regional Police, officers responded to an alarm around 5:30 a.m. and found the front door smashed in. A total of 296 cartons of cigarettes, worth approximately $10,000, had been stolen. Ford posts gains in Nov. car, truck sales Ford of Canada reports continued strong sales of both cars and trucks. For the month of November, car sales were up 11% compared with last November, while truck sales rose 34%. _ These sales increases followed Ford‘s spectacular sales gains in October, when combined car and truck sales rose by 25% compared with October 1992. Ford of Canada sold 8,979 cars in November, up from 8,116 in November 1992. Ford truck sales of 12,073 were up from last year‘s 8§.991. "We have kept our very strong sales momentum going because Canadian customers recognize good value," said John Radford, viceâ€"presâ€" ident â€" General Marketing Ford of "The sales increases were widespread across both car and truck lines. In cars, Escort sales were up 17%; Taurus up 26%; Sable up 49%; and Lincoln Mark VIII up 189% from November of last year." Auto workers give $3,500 to foodbank Unionized Canadian autoworkâ€" ers across the country have chipped in to make sure no one goes hungry in Oakville over the holiday season. Recently, the Canadian Auto Workers union, through the CAW Social Justice Fund, donated $3,500 to the Oakville Fareshare Foodbank. The funds were allocatâ€" ed to ensure the foodbank would be able to proved a nutritionally balâ€" anced diet for recipients, according to Buzz Hargrove, president of the CAW Social Justice Fund. Thieves make In addition, the Local 707 CAW contributed $1550 to the Oakville Salvation Army. The investigation is continuing Recipe fit for our feathered friends from Pat Smith Oakville bird lady, Pat Smith passes along the following sugges tion for feeding birds in winter. If you would like to help your feathered friends keep warm during the winter months, make up the folâ€" lowing recipe: in cigarettes Cook two cups of oatmeal in four cups of boiling water for two minutes. Well after 10 long months, Well after 10 long monitns, 14.75 credits I earned, and 12 maturity credits granted to me, I finally made it. The joy I felt when I was handed my diploma at the graduation ceremony is a feeling and experience I will never forget. My high school diploma has opened doors for me that I never knew existed. This diploma has not only given me an opportunity to attend college to further my educational goals, it has taught me that if I really want do to someâ€" thing I can. The hard work had another benâ€" efit. I was granted parole. On Nov. 2nd, I was freed. All this was made possible for me by a group of people here at Maplehurst who tional staff at Maplehurst, I began to realize that if I worked really hard, I could earn my high â€" school diploma â€" and start college in s believe in me and are dedicated to _ goals.
