Rice on ice Oakville‘s Sean Rice, along with his senior pairs partner Jodeyne Higgins, is excited to be invited back to his "home club" as the guest act in next weekend‘s much anticipated ice show. The ice show â€" which also features the club‘s provincial champion and national calibre precision skating teams (three teams competed this weekend in the national championships) â€" runs next Saturday (April 9) at 1:30 and 7 p.m. and next Sunday (April 10) at 1:30 p.m. at Oakville Arena. More than 500 skaters will take part in a $50,000 production so involved that it is held only once every two years. Upwards of 200 volunteers have been involved over the last year helpâ€" ing with the extensive planning and preparations. The pair, who will skate twice in each of the three shows, fell to a sixth place finish at the national championships in Edmonton which meant they did not advance to the Winter Olympics or World Championships. Last year, the pair finished third at the nationals and 10th at the subsequent world champiâ€" onships which were held at Hamilton‘s Copps Coliseum. The theme of this year‘s show is ‘After Hours‘, and involves a lateâ€"night security guard bringing to life different sections of a department store. Cops have a new goal After building up a huge 7â€"1 lead, however, the school‘s hockey team did manage to keep the cops â€"â€" all volunteer members of a new police charity hockey squad â€" at bay for a 7â€"6 win. Some Loyola secondary school students were almost caught by Halton cops recently. Hope springs eternal for ardent golfer Michael Brooks would love to compete professionally Have clubs, will golf. That sums up local golfer Michael Brooks who recently picked up some hardware for last season‘s exploits and is probably happier than most to see spring temperatures melt away the last remaining snow. He was awarded the trophy for low stroke average for a local mini golf tour called the Amaâ€"Tour, an amaâ€" teur event that includes half a dozen stops at Torontoâ€" area courses. He won all three of the tour stops he entered last year and tour coâ€"founder Bob Mauro said he probably would have won total points if had entered them all. "He‘s incredibly talented," he said. The winter, unfortunately provided him a lot of time to mull over the games â€" a par 72 at Hidden Lake on "a rainy, foggy day", a twoâ€"under 70 at Royal Woodbine, and a twoâ€"under 70 at Richmond Hill which combined to give him a 70.3 stroke average. "On the PGA tour that would be worth about $800,000," he mused. He tried to get into the Canadian Open but didn‘t make the cut at a qualifyer at Devil‘s Pulpit. He‘s nibbled at the big time. He went to the qualifyâ€" ing school for the Canadian tour but nullified a good showing on a silly error when he signed the wrong score card. f The Halton cops‘ hockey team â€" the Boyz N Blue â€" recently took on the Loyola high school hockey team Although hitting 14 greens, he said "I just couldn‘t See Official Rules/Odds pasted at participating McDonald‘s .. ... ... ©1994 SEGA OF CANADAINC. You‘ll definitely find Brooks in the top amateur events in the province this summer â€" and who knows, maybe he‘ll hit the big time. There, amidst the familiar sounds of whistles and pucks bouncing off posts and boards, he said the stereoâ€" type of a police officer splitting his life between a police cruiser and a coffee shop melts away. The police team is supported by two sponsors â€" Subway and Sharkey‘s on the Water â€" and is comprised of hockey buffs from all four police divisions including Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Georgetown. "That‘s our background, too." Down in the trenches, as the two sides give each other their best, a respect is forged on both sides that lingers after the came. Another benefit, is the opportuniâ€" ty to raise money for a worthwhile cause. Loyola, for instance, used the proceeds for their school. "It was a good atmosphere," said Corey.
