Mowers, check your engines It‘s Earth Day, and soon Oakville will be abuzz with the sound of runâ€" ning lawnmowers. Music to Cliff Carley‘s ears. The owner of Cliff‘s Lawn and Garden Equipment Ltd., 488 Morden Rd., Cliff is revved up for the 1994 mowing season, and says many homeowners are already bringing their mowers in for a thorough going over. Most lawns probably won‘t require mowing for another couple of weeks, he says, but some residents have already mown small patches which receive a lot of sunlight. "After the long winter we‘ve had, they‘re anxious to get out there." Most are concerned about whether they can convert their mowâ€" ers to mulchers, in light of the Town of Oakville‘s environmentally responsible ban on including grass clippings in the municipal wastestream. Some highâ€"end mowâ€" ing equipment can be converted, he says, but many homeowners will end up scrapping their $200 model for a new one, or using it at the cottage. If you‘re ready to invest in a product which lasts ten to twenty years, instead of the average fiveâ€" year lifespan of massâ€"produced modâ€" els, be prepared to pay more, he notes. "We sell only highâ€"quality prodâ€" ucts, and they start at $400. But you‘re not only paying for a better machine, you‘re backed by an indeâ€" NEW MOW FEED FERTILIZER SPREADER, THE ONEâ€"TRIP TORO. Cliff‘s is an authorized dealer for the Toro Company, which Carley enthusiastically refers to as "one of the leading environmental specialâ€" ists." Toro is in the process of develâ€" oping many innovative products, and has recently introduced a fertilizer spreader that is mounted to a lawnâ€" mower, combining two jobs into one. In Canada, Toro is currently testâ€" marketing an organic fertilizer that Carley says could revolutionize the fertilizer industry. Like cars, mowers last longer when they are maintained. Whether you prefer to do it yourself or have it serviced, the oil, air filter and spark plug should be changed annually, and the engine should be checked for loosened or damaged components, advises Carley. For gasâ€"powered mowers, buy fuel a gallon at a time, as fresh fuel reduces hard starts and carburetor buildâ€"up, he notes. This is a good rule of thumb even if you‘re adding © 1994 The Toro Company * Exclusive Toro Mow and Feed" system combines two tasks into one * Unique Recycler‘ I mowing system produces a power ful vacuum for a clean cut, + Mow Feed system applies fertilizer exactly where you mow, eliminating skips and streitks. Quantities limitedâ€" offer available while supplies last a commercial stabilizer to the fuel. "We spend a lot of time explainâ€" ing. this to customers. At the end of the season, run it completely dry, and put the leftover gas in your car." Modern computerized mowers have become so sophisticated that service technicians at Cliff‘s spend much of the winter in school, honing their knowledge of engine systems and the specialized tools required to service the new products. Computerized trimmers and chainâ€" saws frequently find their way to the service counter, Carley says. "The untrained novice doesn‘t have a chance any more. Even if you manage to put it back together, it may look all right, but it won‘t run right." Visit Cliff‘ s Lawn and Garden Equipment soon or call them at 844â€" 4304.
