His Noyes underwent a religious conversion in his early twenties and felt that from that day forâ€" ward, he was "without sin". God was guiding him, he felt, and therefore, whatever he did was right. He once explained "Under the new covenant, God says ‘Do as you please, for I promise that your pleasure shall be mine as I will write my law upon your heart.‘ " In other words, the perâ€" son who was genuinely devoted to God would naturally and automatâ€" ically do what was right. Local group Spiritual Posse will bring their country rock flavor to a special Western fundâ€"raising event being hosted tomorrow by Ultra Mart, corner of Upper Middle Road and Eighth Line. All proceeds will go towards the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. During the 1800‘s, the United States witnessed the growth of a number of "homeâ€"grown" reliâ€" gious groups, including the Mormons and the Shakers. Of these, the Oneida group was one of the most interesting because of their commitment to communal living and to John Noyes‘ concept of "complex marriage". While the Mormons believed in polygamy â€" allowing a man to have more than one wife â€" Noyes encouraged (almost to the point of demandâ€" ing) both men and women to have multiple sexual partners. As Noyes spread his message, he gathered together a community of followers who formed Oneida. These followers lived and worked together under Noyes‘ direction and the organization was, in many ways, very successful. Women enjoyed greater equality and freeâ€" dom at Oneida than in the larger American society of the time. Noyes encouraged everyone to participate in a wide variety of community activities, and everyâ€" one took turns with the more borâ€" ing and tedious tasks. It didn‘t last, however. Oneida today is a corporation. But the community remains an interâ€" esting attempt to find a happier and more satisfying way of life. Spiritual Posse will appear between 3 and 5 p.m. at the front of the store. Other outdoor activities planned include a pancake breakfast between 9 and 11 a.m.; charitable BBQ between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.; gunslinger Black Bart, 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. and pony and wagon rides. When we buy Oneida silverâ€" ware or dishes, most of us are not aware of the heritage of the Oneida name and business. But the history of the Oneida religious community and its founder â€" John Humphrey Noyes â€" is a fascinatâ€" ing one. ‘Ultra‘ rock concert Without Sin By Spencer Klaw Published by Penguin Books ; Stoneweek Furmiture‘s Sermiâ€"Annual Warehouse Clearance Sale Your Road To Savings!
