(off Tomken Rd., N. of Derry â€" Mississauga) the airways is reduced between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. with a peak at 4 a.m. In the normal airway, these fluctuations are barely measurable and are usually unnoticed. In many asthmatics, the changes are magniâ€" fied many times with the airway narrowing and, subsequently, chokâ€" ing the person. This leads to disâ€" rupted sleep in many asthma sufferâ€" ers and means that many children with asthma often miss school. The Lung Association advises parents and care givers to watch for the following signs which may indiâ€" cate a child is suffering from asthâ€" * Breathlessness causing the child to speak in oneâ€"toâ€"two word sentences; + Tightening of neck muscles with each inhalation; + Increased rate of breathing even when the child is resting; * Repeated episodes of coughing and/or wheezing. COST OF ASTHMA Not only does asthma affect its sufferers, it also indirectly affects all Canadians because it costs $591â€" million annually. A 1993 study by Glaxo Canada Inc. found the mediâ€" cal cost alone is $393â€"million. Then, there are the economic costs such as short and longâ€"term disability, lost work days, reduced employee productivity, and the financial impact of premature deaths. On an individual basis, Glaxo found the total annual cost for a very severe asthmatic to be $13,572, nearly 100 times greater than the cost of a person with mild asthma which would be $76. This name study also found that asthma results in an average of more than three million physician office visits, 146,000 emergency room visits, 190,000 hospital inâ€" patient days, 1.3â€"million lost work days, and an estimated 15,000 ambulance calls a year. To help prevent asthma, Kulnies says use common sense. "Figure out your triggers and watch for warning signs. If you‘re allergic to animals, get rid of pets or at least keep them out of the bedroom." Other triggers are cold air and pollen, so the Halton Lung Association suggests keeping chilâ€" dren indoors on very cold days and on days when the pollen count is high. ~When it comes to medications, there are lots of excellent ones (905) \» available and Kulnies says they are looking at a new treatment which involves treating the inflammation throuch a cortisone steroid.
