Police budget cutbacks topic of July 8th hearing By HOWARD MOZEL Oakville Beaver Staff formal hearing date has finally been set aside for the Halton Police Services Board to address its contentious budget and manpower problems. July 8th has been set aside by the Ontario Civilian Commission on Police Services to deal with two related issues stemming from Halton Region‘s refusal to approve the force‘s budget as presented. According to chairman Barry Quinn, his Board had already cut $2 million from its budget when the Region told them another $295,000 had to be trimmed â€" a decision which did not sit well with anyone involved. "We believed we had a bare bones budget when we went to them," said Quinn. Included in the Board‘s original cuts were the elimination of six duty clerks and the locking of Halton‘s police stations at night at a saving of $240,000. In order to reduce staffing numbers the Board approached the Halton Regional Police Association which quickly made it known it did not approve. The Commission‘s permission is needed to reduce the size of the force, hence the July 8th hearing. "Because these two issues are so closely linked they will be held on the same day," explained Quinn. Bronte Creek Park celebrates childhood If the Commission does not conâ€" done the cutting of the six clerks, Quinn said his Board will then be looking at ways to chop a total of about $500,000 from its already gaunt budget. In the meantime, offiâ€" cials from both the Board and Halton are continuing to meet. â€" Come celebrate the joys of youth at Bronte Creek Provincial Park â€" June 18th and 19th.
