On Tuesday, the Town‘s Administrative Services Committee ‘considered adding inâ€"line skating to its list of prohibited activities and whether to tack on a $28.75 fine for those who flaunt the byâ€"law. The issue, however, was referred back to the Legal Department for advice on how the current byâ€"law is working. It will be back on the table next Tuesday. When skateboards became a safeâ€" ty concern several years ago the existing byâ€"law, which prohibited bicycles on downtown sidewalks, was amended to include them. If the byâ€"law is modified yet again, signs would be posted banning inâ€"line skates from sidewalks in several commercial districts. The matter was prompted by a letâ€" ter from Constable Gary Ribble of Downtown Oakville‘s Community Consultation Committee TIPS (Together Improving Public Safety) who wrote to the mayor and memâ€" bers of Council about the problem. "From a risk management standâ€" point, it has now become apparent that further action is required which would also prohibit the use of rollerblades on these sidewalks," said Ribble. "The number of nearâ€"serious acciâ€" dents caused by this type of transâ€" portation on sidewalks has risen," said Ribble. "Should this activity continue unchecked, the safety of pedestrians in Downtown Oakville will continue to be threatened." Ribble â€" who said the issue was "brought a head by a couple of nearâ€" misses" â€" explained that the use of inâ€" line skates has increased between 50% and 70%. The problem is particâ€" ularly pronounced in the summer and after complaints by downtown merâ€" chants, he wrote council. What is important to understand, the Village Constable stressed, is that fines are not levied very frequently. The byâ€"law, he explained, is used more often as a warning. "We‘re not trying to push (users) out on the street," said Ribble, who plans to make a presentation at next week‘s Administrative Services meeting. "We‘re not vindictive."
