_ Four corporate teams of 29 cyclists each helped the spring Big Bike for Stroke event in downtown Oakville raise $12,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Halton, Oakville chapter. Of that amount, over $6,000 was raised by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce team. The other participants were Dominion of Canada Ansurance, Searle of Canada and the Oakville Public Library. The Big Bike ride helped the Oakville chapter surpassed its $215,500 goal by $33,759. With money still coming in, the local campaign has already raised $249,259. P _ Special Events, which included the Big Bike ride, netted $29,083. Jump Rope for Heart raised $97,865 from 20 schools; memorial gifts through Oakville‘s three funeral homes totalled $41,497; Personâ€"toâ€"Person (the door to door February blitz) raised $80,395; and the sale of Anne Lindsay cookbooks came to $419. A $5,000 refitting was made possible through a donation from the Burlington Aldershot Lions Club â€" the same orgaâ€" nization which supplied the program‘s original van six years ago. _ With seating for eight passengers, the new bus also comes equipped with a lift for wheelchairs. iProgram are now enjoying the comfort ‘and convenience of a new customized bus. It is projected that by 2001, this figure will increase to 2,300. Funding is provided by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Social Services, the United Ways of Oakville, Milton, and Halton Hills, and donations from community groups and individuals.
