here in California, up in Sonoma near the Dry Creek area and dry it is! Dan Solomon from Gallo just finished telling me that he could not remember ‘when it rained the last time, perhaps in May or even as early as late April. Great weather for the bugs, he told "There are no bugs here in the vineyards," I said, "I have not seen a single mosquito here in California." "Not those Canadian bugs,” he ,rephed, "our bugs are good." Here we go again, I tell myself, the good bugs. The people over at Fetzers had told me the same. The rest of the world sprays for bugs and here in California they cultivate them and invite them to their vineyards. Actually I should back up a little bit here and explain what the Gallo Winery is really all about. Of course it is no secret that Gallo is the largest winery in the world, and it just hapâ€" pened that last year, during a brief visit to the area, I had participated in a blind tasting of the best Chardonnays California had to offer. Of course those wines were not your average ‘Good bugs‘ tend California vines Clergy: Canon Alex Hewitt, Rector Rev. Andrew Murray, Asst. Curate Ven. Wm. When it was all over, and we saw the bottle, it was the Estate Chardonnay from Gallo that shared the top honors. Over the past few years, Gallo entered the market with a number of very good wines in Ontario and I am told that there will be a number of additions soon in the premium class. It was this vineyard that I was visiting. Not so well known is the fact that Gallo has a policy of conserving at least one acre of land in its wild state for each acre of wines under cultivaâ€" tion. Quite Often, as I could see at the Sonoma vineyard, such wild areas are intermingled with the vineyards itself. That is for the bugs to live in, I was told. Not only can we see an everâ€"increasing resistance to pesticides, but it is also harmful to us and very costly as a botâ€" "You see there are the bad bugs," Dan tells me, "that feed on the wines, and there are the good bugs which feed on the bad ones. With some manâ€" agement it is possible to create the proper environment for the beneficial insects which in turn will invade the grape vines to feed on those bugs which will harm the vines." â€" Does it work? Of course it does, and although it is not one hundred perâ€" cent, it is still a long way from sprayâ€" ing the grapes every few days or so as still is the case, especially in some of the eastern European countries. All of a sudden it dawned on me why everywhere in Sonoma and Napa, pear trees can be found in and around the vineyards. It was not for me to pick them, Dan mentioned but for a type of wasp which feed on the leafhoppers that do so much damage to the grape leaves. TRAFALGAR .
