Feds come to town bearing $41.9â€"m in gifts Infrastructure grants from Ottawa will fund Bronte harbor and other projects By HOWARD MOZEL Oakville Beaver Staff On a Bronte hillside overlookâ€" ing â€"the lake, politicians from three levels of government gathered Thursday for the longâ€"awaited â€" if often selfâ€"congratulatory â€" confirâ€" mation of 26 projects across Halton Region totalling $41.9 milâ€" lion. In Oakville alone, 12 proâ€" jects worth $11.3â€"million were announced. Of six strictly regional proâ€" jects, one â€" the muchâ€"delayed major construction at Bronte Harbor â€" can also be viewed as yet another $5.4â€"million addition to the town. The money will be used to design and construct a marina, waterfront trail, municipal road extension, extensive landscaping, improvements to sewer outfalls and more. The project â€" slated for completion by October 1996 â€" is expected to created an estimated 5,000 manâ€"weeks of employment and 15 longâ€"term jobs. uring a "morning of )‘ tributes" announcing _â€"local funding under the Canada/Ontario Infrastructure Works program, the big winner was easily Oakvillie. A Metroland Community Newspaper Vol. 32 No. 104 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 1994 The additional funding came as welcome new to Angus Kyle, chair of the Oakville Harbors Development Authority. After all, up until Thursday, federal fundâ€" ing had been limited to theâ€"seaâ€" walls that were constructed severâ€" al years ago. While this endeavor is the highest profile undertaking on the list, much of the rest of the money is earmarked for more pragmatic projects like lining sewers and building roads. Exceptions are $3 million for a new police building in Milton and $8.5â€"million for the Regionâ€"wide trunked mobile radio system, designed to upgrade and integrate emergency response communication throughout the region. Such projects earned praise from Oakvilleâ€"Milton MP Bonnie Brown who said municipalities‘ "wish lists" showed more imagiâ€" nation than merely simple road improvements. Oakville‘s Brig. Gen W. Denis Whitaker (retired) will see to that. Although a variety of activities are planned, none will be more moving than the reunion with members of the Belgian Secret Army, resistance fighters critical to the liberation of the port of Antwerp which was key to victory in Europe. That misunderstanding (in the case of our governâ€" ment, plain ignorance and politics) has angered Whitaker and his wife Shelagh, who together have written three books. One of them â€" "Tug Of War: The Canadian Victory That Opened Antwerp" â€" casts a longâ€"overdue light on a struggle which cost the lives of thousands of young Canadians. "People don‘t understand how important Antwerp was in the overall winning of the war," said Whitaker. Yet despite being invited for an allâ€"expense paid trip as the honored guests of the City of Antwerp, the vets (and their wives) have been snubbed by the Department of Veterans Affairs‘ "Canada Remembers," which was created to celebrate the 50th anniversaries of liberation by Canadians of key cenâ€" tres in Europe. In a scathing commentary printed July 28th in the Globe and Mail, the Whitakers explained that the bungling which marred Dâ€"Day ceremonies in France continues to plague subsequent events and how veterâ€" ans â€" the very people who are supposed to be honored â€" have in some cases been virtually ignored.
