A step backward to when the junior hockey team was the talk of the town and the arena was routineâ€" ly filled to the rafters. The Oakville Blades are looking 0 take a step backward. Now merged with the Minor Oaks â€" Hockey Association (MOHA), a new management team, including former Toronto Maple Leaf player Mark Kirton, has now pledged to steal a page from the new Toronto Raptors basketball team and give the promotion end of it a huge boost. The volunteer team‘s first big project is an opening night extravaâ€" ganza for this Friday when the Blades host the Burlington Cougars. Hockey fans can even get in free â€" providing they hand over a donaâ€" tion, of either food or money, to the local Fare Share food bank. Scoring Leaders The first 24 hours of the regular season brought with it some of the highs and lows of Junior hockey for this young Blades squad. Experiencing first game jitters, many of the players found themselves a few steps behind the efficient and experiâ€" enced play of the Milton Merchants, losing 10â€"5. The very next day half of the team experienced some of the adulation and reward of supâ€" porting their young friends in Minor Hockey at the "Skate with the Blades" event hosted by the MOHA _ Hockey _ M.O.M.‘s. Giving numerous autographs and handing out skating tips to the over 150 youngsters who attended provided an opportuâ€" nity for the players to realize the responsibility they have to their Set Back? Now, it‘s down to business this week. Practices will drill the players on speed, intensity and the systems required to win. The players will be coached in the reality that the greatest source of entertainment they can provide is on the ice. there will be lots of fanfare for this Friday‘s Home Opener and, with any luck, this will provide an adrenaline boost to put the Blades over the top.\Don‘t miss this one, fans. A new form of Junior Hockey is back in town. Come on out to meet the "Bladeâ€"Runner," come support the FARE SHARE FOOD BANK and come out to meet the many local heroes who make up this year‘s edition of the Oakville Blades. Oakville‘s own Caroll Baker will sing the national anthem and a memâ€" ber of the Toronto Maple Leafs is expected to be on hand to drop the puck for the honorary open faceâ€"off. Free Blade Tâ€"shirts will be given to the first 300 kids who are 16 years of age and under and accomâ€" panied by a parent. The Blades will be cheered on to the ice by an honor guard of Oakville‘s award winning precision skaters. Between the second and third periods, there will be a shootâ€"out for prizes. And fans will be able to buy Blades season passes for $55 (a $125 value). Also at the game will be the Blades new mascot â€" the appropriâ€" ately named Blade Runner â€" who was unveiled at a press conference Pts. last Thursday. The two organizations actually merged their operations at the beginning of last season. A nonâ€"profit corporation was created and a volunteer board of directors installed who quietly, but energetically, focused their energies on three goals â€" increasing attenâ€" dance, sponsorship and revenue. Blades lose opener in Milton Great strides have already been made, said Oakville Blades presiâ€" dent Ron Barnes. Throughout the preâ€"season, Oakville Blades general manager Murray Walker kept predicting that the Provincial Junior A hockey team would be able to score enough goals. The key, he said, would be whether they could keep enough out. His musings turned prophetic last Friday when the Blades, in Milton for the season opener, scored five goals â€" a barrage that would normally The Blades new management team is hoping for big things. The Blades‘ excitâ€" ing playoff run attracted up to 1,200 fans on some nights. Over the summer, a lot of work has been done on sponsorship. The main sponsor â€" also unveiled at last Thursday‘s press conference â€" is Meray Motors. A second tier of major backers includes the Oakville Beaver, CHWO Radio, Ford, Corbett‘s Wholesale, National Trust, Kelsey‘s and Bruce Hood Travel.
