HPO ‘classic‘ on Oct. 4th When Akira Endo was a small boy, all he wanted to do was play baseball. His father, however, had different ideas. It was post World War II and there were not many violins availâ€" able but Endo‘s father managed to find one in Osaka and made his son practice three hours every day. Three years later, at the age of 13, Endo decided playing a musiâ€" cal instrument wasn‘t so bad afterâ€" all and at the age of 15, he was sent to the U.S. to further his studies, receiving a scholarship to the University of Southern California where he secured both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees. Long Beach City College was Endo‘s first conducting post and after taking third in the Dimitri Mitropoulos International Competition for Conductors two years in a row, he was appointed the music director of the American Ballet Theatre after recâ€" ommendation by Leonard Bernstein. Love for Vipes reflected in Simonsig wines I was impressed to no end. Commonly, as soon as the harvest is over, the grapes have been picked and the juice starts fermenting; the grape vines out in the vineyards are forgotâ€" ten, well, at least until next spring. W1 : Ned EBERSPAECHER I thought that I would ask my dinâ€" ner companion about his vineyard back home in South Africa, while we sampled some of his wines. Looking deeper into his glass, he went on and explained to me that it was after the harvest that his vineyards needed most of the attention. "The wines are then excessively stressed, and we have to walk the rows to see that the vines are in reaâ€" sonable shape; then we fertilize them lightly and water the vines over the next few weeks." The story actually should go back to 1947 when his grandfather started the business, or at least to 1968, when his father, Frans Malan, bottled his first wine and broke ground to upgrade the Stellenbosch wine indusâ€" try by insisting that the bureaucrats update the wine laws to reflect the higher standards and qualities demanded by today‘s knowledgeable consumers. With 270 hectares of vineyards under cultivation, the winery in Koelenhof produces a truly impressive assortment of quality wines that have won more than their share of internaâ€" tional awards. Actually, the Simonsig Wine Estate operates three farms â€" Simonsig, De Hop, and Morgenster. In spite of the proximity to each other, the soil condiâ€" tions differ greatly, permitting the growing of a wide variety of such grapes ~as the Chardonnay, Gewuerztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, and a few others. Add to these the red varieties such as the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and a wine that is quickly becoming a real favorite of mine, the Pinotage. Since that time, Endo‘s reputaâ€" tion has soared and he has perâ€" formed with orchestras throughout the world, in 1992 joining the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra as its music director and principal conductor. And although this is his principal position, he also maintains two other posts: music director of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and the Midâ€"Texas Symphony. "I am on airplanes a lot," he laughs.
