There are several different ways to do this. Only you and your doctor can decide which way is best for you. WANT TO LEARN MORE? Some provinces have local breast screening centres. Be careful though, about getting your information from newspaper and magazine articles, because they are not always correct. The Canadian Cancer Society has many helpful pamphlets, and the people there will tell you about places to get more information. Consult your local Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society for more information. WHAT SHOULD I DO TO CARE FOR MY BREASTS? Have your breasts checked regularly through: Mammography (pronounced mamâ€"0OGâ€"raâ€"fee) Physical Examination of the Breasts by a Health Professional Breast Selfâ€"Examination (BSE) MAMMOGRAPHY 4 One of the ways to protect and care for your breast health is to talk to your doctor about mammography. Mammography is a type of xâ€"ray. These xâ€"rays help your doctor find Iumps inside your breasts that are too small to feel. It also gives you and your doctor information about lumps that are found by you during BSE or by a health professional during a hfiysical examination of the breasts. All women between 50â€"69 years should have a mammogram every two years, Those women who are under age 50 and who are at a higher risk for breast cancer should ask their doctor about mammography. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION This can be done in two ways. One way is to have your doctor or a trained nurse examine your breasts every other year for Iumps. The other way is to check your own breasts for Ilumps, and this is called a breast selfâ€"examination or BSE. Both are important. BREAST SELFâ€"EXAMINATION Breast Selfâ€"Examination is something you can do for yourself. It lets you know what is normal for your breasts, then you will be able to notice even very minor changes. The need to do BSE becomes more and more important with age. The Canadian Cancer Society strongly recommends that all women over age 40 do BSE each month at the same time, even after the menopause. The Canadian Cancer Society has a pamphlet on BSE that you might find helpful. WHAT TO LOOK FOR After you have practiced BSE a few times you will learn what is normal for your breasts. Change can signal a problem. Look very carefully at your breasts in a mirror. If there is puckering (dimpling) of the skin on your breasts or around our nipples, or the appearance of what is sometimes called ‘orange peel skin," patches that are pink , red or normal in colour, but where the pores stand out, this could be a warning signal. If there is any filace in your breasts that feels Iumpy like a gea, or that is thicker or harder than the rest, this could also e a warning signal. Tenderness or pain in your breasts and unusual discharge from your nipples are usually due to a benign (not cancer) condition, but they may indicate breast cancer. Bleeding from the nipples or crusting should be checked to make sure this is not due to cancer. If you notice any of these things, see your doctor right away. ARE ALL BREAST LUMPS CANCER? No. Most are not cancer. But, the only way to know for sure if a lump or any other change in your breasts is cancer is to have your doctor check it.
