Laurentian University in Sudbury named its first inductees into its newly created hall of fame earlier this month, and the first woman honored is an Oakville athâ€" lete who has become very promiâ€" nent in the local basketball scene. Local basketball star is honored Carol Hamiltonâ€"Goodale, along with husband Bill, run the nonâ€"profâ€" it Home Court basketball leagues and clinics. A member of Canada‘s national team from 1985 to 1990, she put together a stellar university career, winning the Nann Copp award as Canada‘s outstanding female basâ€" ketball player in 1985. Hamiltonâ€"Goodale led her high school team to two provincial titles before going on to star as a freshâ€" man with Ohio State University on an athletic scholarship. But she returned to her home town of Sudbury (earning a B.A. at Laurentian) the following year, wishing to be a part of the Canadian basketball experience. She was also named firstâ€"team OWIAA allâ€"star and firstâ€"team Allâ€" Other honors include the 1989 Harry Jerome Award as Canada‘s top female black athlete. Following a stint playing profesâ€" sional basketball in France, the couâ€" ple moved to Oakville â€" Bill‘s home town â€" four years ago. Canadian from 1984 though to 1987. They were disappointed to disâ€" cover no adult leagues, and so they started one. Now, of course, Home Court includes an even bigger youth component. Hamiltonâ€"Goodale was in good company for the awards dinner on October 15. The first male inductee was none other than Alex Baumann a twoâ€"time Olympic gold medalist. Weekend split for the Blades The Oakville Blades‘ convincing 9â€"2 win Saturday night against the Royal York Rangers somewhat made up for the previous night‘s dismal 8â€" 5 loss to the Hamilton Kilty Bees. But not entirely. Manger Murray Walker was still bemoaning the third period slugfest in Friday‘s game that saw an entire line â€" B.J. Hamilton, Paul Dolan and Sasha Perisic â€" turfed out of the game for joining fellow teamâ€" mate Matt Appleby in fisticuffs. Unlike some other Provincial Junior A west division teams (can you say Brampton), the Oakville Blades frown on WWFâ€"type rumâ€" bles, said Walker. If it‘s a twoâ€"onâ€"one situation, it‘s a different story and the commandâ€" ment against being the second (or third or fourth, etc.) can be ignored. "The combatants have already been told that whatever suspensions the OHA (Ontario Hockey Association) dishes out, I will douâ€" ble. There will be a few guys sitting out Friday night (when the Blades host Georgetown at the Oakville Arena, 8 p.m.) Equally in the spotlight was defenceman Mike Byrne‘s escapade in which he lined up a Kilty Bees player in the midst of a goal scoring dance, a la Dale Hunter. The Kilty Beeés end up up scoring two power play goals on their fiveâ€"minute advantage, thank you very much. Walker, meanwhile, concedes he‘s been ormnery of late. But the team has got to learn discipline, he said. "We totally dominated," said Walker. "We were up 5â€"0 before they knew what happened." _â€"_On the bright side of things, there was Saturday‘s game. It might have been a case of where less is more. The short staffed Blades could only muster three lines â€" but no one was complaining about the extra work load. "My honest opinion is that we perform a lot better with three lines," said Walker. "The players are out more, and they get in the game." Here‘s the Oakville scoring stats: HAMILTON 8, OAKVILLE 5 (Friday): down 3â€"0, Oakville fought back with three goals. Hamilton then put it out of reach with another three (including two on the power play). Second period: 2 (pp), Kevin Cole from Matt Interbartolo and Darryl Curtis; 3 (pp), Kent Williams from Jason Slaney and Dave Smith; First period: 1, Sasha Perisic from Jason Slaney and Mike Gamble; . Third period: 4, Mike Robinson from Matt Interbartolo and Kevin Cole; 5, Matt Interbartolo from Kevin Cole and Mike Robinson. First period:1 (pp), Matt Interbartolo from Kevin Cole and Brent Strike; 2, Mike Gamble from Mike Robinson and Marcel Kars; 3, Darry! Curtis from Kevin Cole and Matt Interbartolo; 4, Jason Slaney from Andrew Shortt; _OAKVILLE 9, HAMILTON 2 (Saturday): Oakville fired in five unanâ€" swered goals to start the game. Second period: 5, Matt Swain from Dave Smith; 6, Kent Williams, unassistâ€" ed; 7, Darry! Curtis from Kevin Cole and Matt Interbartolo. Third period: 8, Matt Swain from Mike Gamble and Matt Appleby; 9, Kent Williams from Jagpn Slaney and Corey Waring. "It was a real thrill," said Hamiltonâ€"Goodale. "When you think of all the athletes that have gone through there. For them to want to make Alex and I the first, that‘s just about the biggest tribute they can pay to you." While it would certainly be a fitâ€" ting end to a stellar playing career, she hints the book might not yet be closed. She hopes to again play for the national team but says a few things still have to be "ironed out."
