Oakville "It‘s a labor of love, when one volunteers. It‘s a chance to work with some impressive people like Christopher Newton from the Shaw festival and world famous soloists," says the manager of distribution for G.E. Lighting Canada. In the spring of ‘92, Patti Vipond a freelance writer, film extra, and 11â€"year veteran of the prestigious Mendelssohn Choir, heard over the radio that Opera Hamilton was Gerry Philp has been a member of Opera Hamilton for 6 years. Philp has studied with a number of vocal teachers, including Oakville‘s Marguerite. Couldridge. In addition, Philp has lent his voice to a number of church choirs. ing to produce I due Foscari for the second time since 1989. The story of I due Foscari is based on the drama by Lord Byron, taken from the real life events of 15th century Venice. Newton moved the opera setting into the 19th century, not wanting, "this story of political injustice and perâ€" sonal tragedy to be perceived as a fairytale that happened long ago, and far away in an exotic setting." Newton hopes this produces, "a greater sense of immediacy, which will encourage the audience to idenâ€" tify with the characters in a more meaningful way." Opera Hamitlon‘s staging of I due Foscari will be sung in Italian with English subtitles. To reserve tickets, call Opera Hamilton at (905)527â€"0089. Donald Williams will be back from England, just in time to sing in I due Foscari‘s chorus. He‘s been touring with the Canadian Orpheus Male Choir. Williams is celebrating his seventh season with Opera Hamilton and can boast of being in practically every production since joining. The former teacher at Mohawk College was a member of the Welsh National Opera Chorus , and spent four years in the chorus of the Canadian Opera Company. Grace DeLottinville joined Opera Hamilton in September, 1991. She studied voice in her native Chicago, at Northwestern University. After moving to Canada, she continued her studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music and joined Toronto‘s Gilbert and Sullivan Society. ' When Delottinville isn‘t singing she keeps busy working partâ€"time in communications for the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and is presently pursuing a Master‘s degree in drama at the University of Toronto, "Every Opera Hamilton production is done very professionâ€" ally, she says. "Even though the members of the chorus are nonâ€"proâ€" fessional, we‘re still treated profesâ€" sionally. With every production we learn a lot, because that is what is expected of us. I participate because I learn and I really love it." auditioning for the chorus. Although Vipond has been singing in choirs since she was six, she thought that Opera Hamilton would be something different and wanted to give it a try. She was pleasantly surprised when she went to the audition and found her former teacher from University of Toronto‘s faculty of music, Peter Oleskevich as the chorus director. "The people in the company are very friendly, it‘s such a great expeâ€" rience and the chorus is a good place to start out," says Vipond. "Peter is a fabulous director, he knows all sorts of interesting facts about the music." dmission $2.00 ~* .
