Hydro commussioners under the gun over decision to build $5.8â€"million headquarters By DIANE HART Special to the Beaver Oakville Hydro commissioners came under fire this week for their new $5.8â€"million building located at Fourth Line and Wyecroft. At the Monday Ward 2 allâ€"candidates meeting, hydro commissioners were criticized for spending money on a large buildâ€" ing at a time of fiscal restraint. Commissioners were queried about the decision to build a large multiâ€"million dollar headquarters when the public utility has been downsizing and losing staff. Despite hydro chairman Jack Brewer‘s assertion that the buildâ€" ing was needed to consolidate the staff and operations into one cenâ€" tral area on Wyecroft Road, one challenser was unconvinced. "It‘s one thing to build a buildâ€" ing for tomorrow, and it‘s quite another to build one for what may happen in 25 years time. People don‘t build for expected capaciâ€" ties anymore. That‘s what the Reichmann‘s did. You may have the land to build to expand if needed, but not the building," criticized challenger, David Froom. As well, the location in the south of Oakville was criticized, as most of the expected growth for Oakville will be in the north. However, Brewer said the locaâ€" tion was, in fact, a good one because most of the installations Oakville Hydro must access are in the south. He explained the locaâ€" tion on Trafalgar Road had to be changed because of reâ€"zoning problems with the future Uptown Core. Later, he said, there have been ongoing criticisms of the building as being "overâ€"built" â€" but said it is a building for the future. We don‘t want to be out short," he said. Brewer said the land was â€" ooo .
