In her showroom, Harth has Chinese dolls, West Indian dolls, Asian, as well as, North American dolls. There is even a doll with red pigâ€" tails and straw hat, closely resembling PE. Island‘s Anne of Green Gables. It seems Rita took up dollâ€"making as a hobby about 15 years ago, but only realized the business potential of her craft in 1988, when she went into it fullâ€"time. She was still living in Frankfort, Germany, then, though she and her family were interested in the wideâ€"open spaces of Canada and the lively North American doll collecting market. In fact, she says, "In Canada, the market is just developing. Down in the States, however, dollâ€"making and colâ€" lecting is quite big." The Harths have dealers south of the border that handle their dolls, give shows, and arrange some commissioned sales. Four years ago, the family immiâ€" grated to Canada and took up resiâ€" dence on a rural property in the village of Stirling (near Belleville). Three things they hadn‘t counted on; the killer mosquitoes, and aboundâ€" ing snow, and their house burning down. Since moving to Oakville in September of 1993, their lives have taken a turn for the better, they say. "We love Canada," Kurt was heard to murmur, "but especially Oakville." It is a particularly busy time of year for the dollâ€"makers, as they give classâ€" es Monday to Thursday evenings, and GRAND OPENING! MadenoiselleSpa wWwOMEN‘S HEALTH CLUBS also, prepare for the upcoming craft shows â€" notably the "One of a Kind" show and sale, to be held Nov. 24th through Dec. 4th, at the CNE â€" where literally hundreds of crafters will flog their own wares. For the Christmas season, the .Harths turn their fancies to other porcelain items â€" in addition to dolls, like teacup fairies, tree ornaments, and Santa Claus figures with mohair beards. Rita explained that several of her students are creating dolls now as Christmas gifts for special friends or relatives and genuine labors of love they are. It takes about five classes (at $8 a pop) to complete a doll, plus there is the cost of materials, usually about $150. A pair of eyes alone, can run 80 cents to $80, depending on whether you want acrylic, silicone, or blown glass. In the end, however, the result is often a treasure â€" a work of art â€"and a valuable collectible as years go by. In any case, the craft classes are fun from a purely social point of view, Harth maintained. Her students, who come from as far as Hamilton and Mississauga, but mostly from Burlington and Oakville â€" kibitz freely over coffee and biscuits about everyâ€" thing "except politics, religion, and people we actually know." The studio has three compact comâ€" puterized kilns for firing the porcelain pieces and employs one seamstress to assist in sewing doll outfits.
