The Halton Roman Catholic School Board has received, on the last day of school before the twoâ€" week Christmas break, federal government approval to offer a yearâ€"long Environmental Science program in conjunction with Sheridan College. The program will be open to a maximum of 25 students aged 15 to 24, who are out of school and § are undecided about their future career goals. "It‘s open to students who have a high school diploma and are wandering aimlessly on the streets with no career goals," says $ Robert Ciarlo, viceâ€"principal of Continuing Education Services at the Catholic board‘s Adult Learning Centre in Oakville. "They can be recent graduates with diplomas, or dropâ€"outs. One of the requirements is that they be out of school." Applicants must also be Canadian citizens or permanent residents (landed immigrants) to be accepted. To date, Ciarlo has received about 40 applications of which between 10 to 15 can be accepted into the program. "The aim is to get them back into school, and into a career in the environmental sciences," said Ciarlo. STARTS MONDAY The program, to begin Monday Jan. 2nd â€" applications will be accepted up to two weeks after the program begins â€" will consists of 25 weeks of classroom instrucâ€" tion to June 30th, followed by a 24â€"week coâ€"operative job placeâ€" ments at related industries, from July 3rd to Dec. 15th. At the job placements, remuâ€" neration will be left up to the indiâ€" vidual employers, "but hopefully they will . . . and hopefully the students will get permanent jobs. The work placements will be in their field of study." During the work semester, the students will return to the classâ€" room one day per week to evaluâ€" ate their job placements, and obtain necessary advice and assisâ€" tance from faculty. The program, serving as both an upgrading and refresher course, leads to three high school and four college credits. "We have a partnership agreeâ€" ment with Sheridan College," explained Ciarlo. "In addition, there are a lot of young people who are out of school, who can only get low payâ€" ing or contract employment, and have an undecided career path. We‘re hoping to give them a career option." The classroom sessions will be offered at the Halton Roman Catholic School Board‘s Adult Learning Centre at 2350 Trafalgar Rd.
