The Halton Roman Catholic School Board has received, on the last day of school before the twoâ€" week Christmas break, federal government approval to offer a yearâ€"long Environmental Science program in conjunction with Sheridan College. The program will be open to a maximum of 25 students aged 15 to 24, who are out of school and § are undecided about their future career goals. "It‘s open to students who have a high school diploma and are wandering aimlessly on the streets with no career goals," says $ Robert Ciarlo, viceâ€"principal of Continuing Education Services at the Catholic board‘s Adult Learning Centre in Oakville. "They can be recent graduates with diplomas, or dropâ€"outs. One of the requirements is that they be out of school." Applicants must also be Canadian citizens or permanent residents (landed immigrants) to be accepted. To date, Ciarlo has received about 40 applications of which between 10 to 15 can be accepted into the program. "The aim is to get them back into school, and into a career in the environmental sciences," said Ciarlo. STARTS MONDAY The program, to begin Monday Jan. 2nd â€" applications will be accepted up to two weeks after the program begins â€" will consists of 25 weeks of classroom instrucâ€" tion to June 30th, followed by a 24â€"week coâ€"operative job placeâ€" ments at related industries, from July 3rd to Dec. 15th.
