The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 3, 2006 - 15 Region's larviciding program has begun The Region recently began applying larvicide to bodies of standing water throughout Halton to control the West Nile virus. The product is used in Halton's urban areas where mosquito larvae have been found. Signs indicating pesticide use are placed once larvicide has been applied to a site. Monitoring of catch basins for larvae on public property in the region's urban areas has also commenced. When mosquito larvae are discovered, the catch basins will be treated weekly. The use of larvicide is intended to reduce the number of mosquitoes that may potentially carry and pass on West "Residents can assist in controlling West Nile virus by removing any standing water on their own properties and by reporting any sightings of dead birds to the region."
