The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 3, 2006 - 19 Houseproofing best solution for keeping wildlife at bay I t's a wild time of year at the Oakville and District Humane Society. With the population in and around Oakville and Milton expanding at an incredible speed, the habitats of wild animals are being displaced. Local residents call the shelter for help regarding nuisance wildlife. However, for most, the best solution begins at home. "House proofing against wildlife keeps wild animals off of your property," stated Colleen Gyergyai, Manager-Animal Protective Services at the Oakville and District Humane Society. "Most people think that trapping is the best solution, but we've found that establishing barriers is far better for the animal." In the past, trapping and relocation of animals was a popular solution to urban wildlife issues. Research and time, however, have proven that the animals do not generally survive the relocation. Placed in a strange location without knowledge of how to find food or shelter and with the likelihood that it has just invaded another animal's territory, the animal's life is placed at risk. If the animal is female, it is a real possibility that babies have been orphaned. If the babies were left in a house and die, the homeowner will not experience a pleasant post-relocation situation. Disease is another real issue related to relocation. "There is a definite risk that disease will be spread when an animal is relocated," stated Gyergyai. "There has been a significant increase in rabies in wild animals, which is the reason that relocation and trapping have become illegal." Although death and disease pose the greatest threat to a relocated animal, the homeowner may find that it has not taken away the problem. Many animals that survive relocation will find their way back to their `home' or a new wild animal will move into their previous home. "House proofing is a solution that poses no risk to the animal and is effective," added Gyergyai. "Be aware of what attracts animals and understand the reasons why your house may be appealing." Here are a few tips to think about when considering house proofing your home against wildlife: · Fencing Having to make an effort to get into your yard may be enough of a deterrent to entering. Check your property thoroughly for access points and close them off prior to having wildlife take up residence. · No Admittance Vents to the outside attract birds. Chimneys invite birds, squirrels, raccoons and other visitors. Roof and soffit areas may offer admittance to an unwanted wild guest. Cap off your chim- ney and make sure that all other potential access points are closed off. Check your house regularly. · Yard appeal -- Open decks are less desirable to wildlife because they are exposed. Avoid large patio areas which attract snakes who like to sun. Keep lowhanging bushes and shrubs trimmed back to avoid offering ideal hiding locations for a variety of animals. · Food -- Easy access to garbage, fruit trees, vegetable gardens, ponds with fish, and lawns with grubs offers an inviting buffet for wild animals. Store garbage securely and use fencing to protect other food sources. · Water -- All animals require water, but pools and living near a river or lake also invites waterfowl to your property. Avoiding these guests is difficult. If you are having difficulty with wildlife on your property, contact the Oakville and District Humane Society for more information at 905-845-1551. Saw palmet- culprit in prostate enlargement. The other seems to be Estrogen. As free testosterone declines with age, the ratio of estrogen to testosterone creates an imbalance. High levels of estrogens (estradiol, estrone) relative to testosterone (also referred to as the estrogen/ androgen ratio) is also a risk factor for BPH. In addition, testosterone conversion to estrogen (aromatization) also affects prostate tissue. One remedy for this estrogen dominant environment is something called Nettle (Urtica Dioica). In fact, Saw palmetto and Nettle combined have been shown to work better synergistically than either alone. Hopefully your medical practitioner and your holistic practitioner can work together to provide the best overall treatment for your situation. There are specific tests for early detection associated with prostate function, so have regular check-ups as a preventative measure, before problems begin.
