The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 3, 2006 - 23 OT girls win Trinity drops heartbreaker in girls' Jr. soccer final Halton rugby title, prepare for OFSAA By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF By Matt Civak SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Kristen Passmore scored three trys as the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils defeated the Robert Bateman Wild 34-5 in Wednesday's Halton high school girls' AAA/AAAA rugby final. Sam Campana, Sam Paul and Paige DeMarchi all added one try each while Carleigh Martin made good on two conversions. Unfortunately for the Wild, the Red Devils defence was in fine form. In fact, the lone try by the Wild's Kate Murphy provided the first points against OT all year. "Our team is evenly matched (offensively and defensively)," said Red Devils co-coach Jacquie Bale-Pece. "We have no holes that way." Kate Harrison, the team captain of the Red Devils, attributes the team's success at both ends of the field to teamwork. "We wouldn't win if we didn't play as a team," Harrison said. "That's what we do. We practice as a team, play as a team, win as a team." OT, which lost last year's Halton final 19-7 to Nelson, will compete in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations tournament that begins Monday in Burlington. "We had a goal at the beginning of the year and (winning Halton) was that goal," the Red Devils' other cocoach, Dan Valley, said. "We're not done yet." Both Valley and Bale-Pece believe that winning a medal at OFSAA is not out of the question and expect their team to finish at least in the top five. As for Robert Bateman, the Wild will be using OFSAA as a learning experience. "It'll be the girls first time in OFSAA and I think that they'll learn a lot," Bateman coach Tino Rademeyer said. "We'll be a much stronger team next year from the experience." "The team's only about five or six years old and every year they've been doing better. We're looking forward to OFSAA and next year." For a team that had not tasted defeat all season, losing Thursday's Halton high school junior girls' soccer final had to have been especially bitter. The Holy Trinity Titans rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the second half to tie Christ the King, but the Jaguars prevented a fairy-tale ending-for the Titans, anyway -- scoring in the final seconds to win 4-3. "To make up a 3-0 deficit in soccer is really a testament to the girls' skill and determination," said Gino Montanari, who coaches the Titans along with Jen McNab. "To come back like that says a lot about them." Either way, it was going to be a heartbreaker for one of the teams. Both the Titans and the Jaguars dominated their divisions. The Titans were 5-0 to sit atop the East Division, outscoring their oppo- nents 24-3. Christ the King led the North Division with an identical 5-0 mark, scoring 29 times. The Jaguars had allowed only two goals in the regular season and two more in three playoff games. So when Christ the King jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening half and added another early in the second half, it would have been easy to call it a day. The Titans didn't want any part of that. Five minutes after the Jags' third goal, Holy Trinity scored its first of the game. Within 10 minutes, the Titans cut the lead to one and then tied the game on Carly Dagys' goal. "The first half they really took it to us," said Montanari. "They had tremendous speed and they were aggressive and didn't give us time to figure them out. At the half we had a chance to come up with a plan and we were able to break their defence apart. Once we got through their defence their goalie was at our mercy." Montanari said the team's ability to work together has been its strength all season. "They understand each other's movements and where they were and they were able to connect with (each other)," he said. Unfortunately, it was the Jags' who would connect for the game's final goal, scoring about 15 seconds before the final whistle, to claim the Halton title. Still, it was a successful season for the Titans. Earlier this year, they entered the Shell Cup, a 16-team senior tournament, and made it to the consolation final. In the Halton semifinal last Tuesday, the Titans beat Notre Dame 3-2. The Fighting Irish had allowed only two goals in six regular season and playoff games heading into the semis. www.brettonskia.com · brettonskia.com · brettonskia.com · brettonskia.com www.brettonskia.com · brettonskia.com · brettonskia.com · brettonskia.com · www.brettonskia.com · brettonskia.com www.brettonskia.com · brettonskia.com · brettonskia.com · brettonskia.com · www.brettonskia.com · brettonskia.com Come down to our great friendly store...
