Bailey won the race, a day after claiming gold in the 400m distance. ETOBICOKE -- When Caitlin Bailey heads down to Boston College this fall, she'll do so with five OFSAA track-and-field medals to her name. The Abbey Park speedster capped her high school-running tenure "I worked so last weekend with her best-ever effort at the hard this year provincial champi- and put so much onships, winning a pair on hold for this. of gold medals at the This makes it so Ontario Federation of worth it ." School Athletic Associations meet in Caitlin Bailey Etobicoke. She was the highlight of another strong Oakville effort at OFSAA track, which included a silver-medal showing by teammate Michael Trnkus (junior boys' 200-metre dash) and bronze-medal win by Iroquois Ridge's Patrice Wright (midget girls' 100m). "It's obviously such a great feeling," Bailey said Saturday, an hour after winning the senior girls' 800m run with a time of 2:10.69 -- 19hundredths of a second faster than secondplace finisher Kate Van Buskirk of TurnerFenton. "I worked so hard this year and put so much on hold for this. This makes it so worth it." The previous day, Bailey took an early lead in the senior girls' 400m final and managed to hold off Lo-Ellen Park's Rebecca Johnston for the gold. Bailey finished in 55.77 seconds, 16hundredths of a second ahead of Johnston. "I knew I had to go out fast because (Johnston) won last year in the junior category," said Bailey. "The last 100 was kind of hurting. The weather hadn't been that warm and my muscles were tight." The 400m and 800m are an odd combination, Bailey admitted. Typically, speedier runners compete in the 200m and 400m while endurance-types opt for the 800m and 1,500m. For some reason, however, the 400m and 800m seem a good fit for Bailey. "I think I was the only girl (in the 800m) who runs the 400," she said. "I have the benefit of a good kick where I can sprint but they have the endurance. If I could stay close enough (in the 800m final), I could use my speed at the end." Bailey won bronze in the midget girls' 400m three years ago, earned gold in the junior girls' 400m in 2004 and claimed bronze in the senior girls' 800m last year. She also won 800m gold and 400m silver at last year's national junior championships in Montreal. See Three page 33 CONFIRM YOUR SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION NOW!!
